Default Intake Removal

Going to learn how to take the intake off using tutorials; I do this so I can replace the oil pressure sender that is bad.

1) Since I am taking the intake off are there any recommended maintainance, replacements, repairs, or services that I can go ahead and do at the same time?

2) Anyone have links to video tutorials? The ones I have are all pictures, which are not bad, but I seem to understand it better when I can see a video.

Ls1howto is all you need. You can follow all of the direction except for disconnecting the fuel lines. I left mine connected and set the intake on the right corner (facing the front of the car) of where the lid sits. I am in the process of relocating my OPS but the one I bought is pricey. It was made for a vette but had to send it back for a longer hose as the engine sits further back in our cars. As far as what else to do I would put on the newer LS6 valley cover. This would eliminate much of the existing LS1 external PCV system. The write up is also on LS1howto but is for the older LS6 cover. The new cover which also eliminates the external PCV valve can be had on eBay for about $80 shipped.

Or you can just get the correct socket and not take the intake off,a lot less work and less chance of messing up the new sensor. Atleast thats how I did it.

If you can change out the OPS without removing the intake go for it but there is too much you can do to removing it outlined in the first two replies. You are going to need the correct socket regardless unless the valley cover is off then you can get at it with an 8" crescent with care.

I agree, if you can get the right socket and get back there, it is alot less work and time than pulling the entire intake off for no reason. Its a pretty easy process to take the intake on and off just alot of bolts and some time. Dont forget new gaskets.

Definitely be prepared with new gaskets. I'd also second the recommendation to considering the '04 valley cover. However, if you're in no hurry to do stuff, you'll find it easy to remove, so you can do that at a later time.

mise well pull the heads and send them to ai and get a g5x3 and do rod bolts oil pump timing chain and fast 102

nah really new intake gaskets is all you need if you go that route. i'd opt for the right socket, however.

i managed to change mine in about an hour and a half start to finish, including a parts run (ls6 intake swap i broke the sensor...) so it's not that bad.

HOW in the lord's name do ANY of you get the OPS socket back there without removing the whole intake???!!!!
Do you have a 4 year old with TINY hands doing the work while looking at mirrors of the OPS area, while you are holding them upside down by the ankles over the (hoodless) cowl?!?!?!

Anyway, besides all of the suggestions so far, IF you are not planning on doing this again for a while, changing out the cam position sensor is also not a bad idea.

Tip to pull the intake off, pull the coil packs off or at least out of the way. I do that anytime i pull mine it gives you more room to get to the bolts and you dont cut your hands and wrists up as much. when you unbolt the intake just watch all the lines and wires in the back. the OPS socket wasnt much at autozone or oreillys and is easier to change it.

I agree with you, its is very tight. I cant remember how much space there is with the stock intake, but certainly with the fast intake there is no change at all. the vacuum lines out of the back of the intake are pretty much touching the sensor. The sensor often gets broken when people don't realize the vacuum pipe is there. Its hard to lift the intake up at the back while gently pulling it forward as you are leaning over the car.
You can get the intake off and back on again within 30 mins, and you know the oil pressure sender unit is seated correctly when you screw the new one in. I got a very long reach socket to be able to removed the sender. I don't think you will get a spanner on there without removing the valley cover too.
