Broken head bolt removal
Broken head bolt removal I have a head with a broken header bolt in it. I've read that it is difficult to get those out and that easy outs will break off before the bolt will come out. I have a flux core welder and wondered if I could just top off the bolt with some weld, clean if up good then tack a nut onto the built up weld and fill it in and be able to remove the broken bolt that way. Opinions and options welcome.

Stuck bolt removal I would defiantly recommend the welding method, I broke off a reverse drill bit in a head bolt and thought I was screwed. I took it to a welder and it took less than 15 minutes for him to weld a nut on the bolt and remove it, it was torqued to about 80ft pounds and about 1/4-1/8 inch below the surface so a header bolt shouldn't be a problem. Plus I think the heat does a lot to loosen it as well.
Because when you set the nut on the bolt and you start welding the flux has no where to go and pools in the weld puddle and you will not get the clean weld you need. Why don't you take a piece of all thread or cut the head off the top of a bolt, clamp it in a vise and weld a nut to the top of it, then try to twist the nut off with a wrench. This would be the best way to evaluate whether it will work.
