Default Broken head bolt removal

I have a head with a broken header bolt in it. I've read that it is difficult to get those out and that easy outs will break off before the bolt will come out. I have a flux core welder and wondered if I could just top off the bolt with some weld, clean if up good then tack a nut onto the built up weld and fill it in and be able to remove the broken bolt that way. Opinions and options welcome.

Default Stuck bolt removal

I would defiantly recommend the welding method, I broke off a reverse drill bit in a head bolt and thought I was screwed. I took it to a welder and it took less than 15 minutes for him to weld a nut on the bolt and remove it, it was torqued to about 80ft pounds and about 1/4-1/8 inch below the surface so a header bolt shouldn't be a problem. Plus I think the heat does a lot to loosen it as well.

My only concern is that I usually see people MIG a nut to the broken bolt. I only have a flux core welder. I didn't know if that would do the job as well or not.

IMO I wouldn't try the flux core for this. Get a welder with bare wire and shield gas.

Why would flux core be bad for this situation? I'm pretty new to welding.

Because when you set the nut on the bolt and you start welding the flux has no where to go and pools in the weld puddle and you will not get the clean weld you need. Why don't you take a piece of all thread or cut the head off the top of a bolt, clamp it in a vise and weld a nut to the top of it, then try to twist the nut off with a wrench. This would be the best way to evaluate whether it will work.

Good idea, kind of like a test run before putting the torch to the head. I'll give that a try.
