Default Making valley cover lift plate.

Got my motor ready to pull out the top. Got an extra valley cover.I was thinking about drilling me two holes in valley cover and putting some hooks on it to pull the motor i know im cheap. Has anybody ever made something like this?Trying to make me a cheap engine puller i can use on all ls motors.

That's an investment cast aluminum piece that's not meant to take that kind of strain. I wouldn't do it.

I would not do what you are contemplating. The valley cover is pretty thin and won't hold the load well with some hooks going through it. You may end up with an engine on top of you.

I did make my own lift plates to go on the valley cover bolts. It is two pieces of 1"x1"x1/8" angle steel with four holes drilled in each for the cover bolts to go through. There are then also two holes on each angle steel for chains to bolt to and some spacers for standoffs (because I like doing things special and stuff). You probably don't need the spacers for the chains. Since the plate does not completely cover the valley while the valley cover is removed, I cut a piece of cardboard to fit between the angle steel and the block, and the cardboard does completely cover the valley.

It works very well and cost me the price of the angle steel I already had sitting in the scrap steel bucket.

Yeah i wasnt thinking about how thin that piece is. That looks like a good idea might have to try that. Any more innovative lift ideas?

Nothing wrong with that, nice and cheap and gets the job done.

Those are all a whole lot of bling to replace $15 worth of angle steel and bolts from Home Depot, and then 20-30 minutes with a drill. Afterwards you will have a couple feet of angle steel left over for some other project.

If you are going to buy a lift plate, get the kind which allows you to change the location of the hook, otherwise the engine will hang at a poor angle for pulling the engine and trans as an assembly. Really though, this is where angle steel and chains works great. You can put the hook anywhere you want and get the angle perfect.

Ill find the link. The one i got from summit is not as long as the whole valley tray. So you can move the whole bracket to the front of the valley or the middle to get the right angle to pull the motor.

I am sure it is plenty strong but that thing looks sketchy to me. I like the summit one better.

I pulled motor & transmission with the one from summit. You can move it to the forward holes & it gives you the right angle to pull it out of a Fbody.

QTP, that's the same one I have, it works wonders but wish I would have made one instead of spending the money. Got to figure in shipping costs too
