'01 had a squeal at 2000 rpm, not under and not over, so another EFFIN problem. No mods to either car and both low miles (21k-23k).
Have had 8 of these 98-02 LS-1's with only these 2 left. Know all the common problems...headlamp motors, driver's side window motor, both side door panel cracks approx. 8 inches from back of door, rear pinion seal leak, electric antenna stopping, radiator low level sensor on 98-99's, etc. Both of these are stock but I guess age is showing and making sounds. Thanks all for your help.
Hopefully the alternator will quiet the chirping sound.

Well the chirping came back about 10 miles down the road and by the time I had made the round trip to work and back it was screaming like a fricken banshee again. Not so bad at idle but as you said, red70judge, at around 2000 rpm. I removed the main drive belt and the ac belt was chirping. So I removed it and installed an older gates belt on the main drive and it's quiet again. Looking at the sides of the gatorback belt, it looks worn already from the misalignment as the edges have been rubbed too long.

red70judge, try sanding your water pump pulley so that it's smooth and see if that doesn't solve your problem. Have you ever used belt dressing? I had in the past .... so I had a build up of gunk in the pulleys. Also, have you isolated which belt - or both?

Thanks for the info on those pulleys .... and it sounds like you are well seasoned at the typical quirks of these cars. I've been there and done that on every single thing that you listed.

Lastly, what have you got under the hood of that `70 Judge? I've got a `79 Firebird 4 speed / 400. The block is from a `70 goat.

I have the same thing going on myself. I have it down to the alternator or water pump.

Have you lightly sprayed water on the grooved side?

No. The funny thing is that some days it make me so mad, and then some days it does not make a sound.

The reason why I asked is because I replaced my alternator as I was sure that the problem was it's bearings. I went to all that trouble only to find out that it was an alignment problem.

Save yourself some time and money and go out and spray some water on the ribbed side of the belt and if the chirps stop then all pulleys and bearings are fine. Also feel the surface of the water pump pulley. If it's not smooth, sand it. Have you ever used belt dressing?

I will try the water. Also I will check the surface of the water pump. No for the belt dressing.
