Question Waterpump/T-stat?

I just had the waterpump replaced under warranty. Even with my mods! The problem is that the waterpump is an '04 model. And the thermostat is different. The t-stat is seperate from the housing. I found out today after I tried to install my old 160* stat in the waterpump and it wouldn't fit. The waterpump opening is too small. I checked the stat with an old school model 160* stat and the openings were the same. It has a rubber gasket that fits on the stat. Can I use an old school 160* stat? Or can I modify the stat that is on there already? If so how? Drill two holes on it? My car is tuned for a 160* stat.

Thanks in Advance
Ever

Anyone know if I can use a SBC 160* thermostat? It fits.

Thanks

Cool

You had it replaced under warranty???
Take it back and make the dealer put the correct pump on for an 2002 model.
Then everything should work as before.

Good point. But too much of a hassle and down time on the car since it's my daily driver. I drilled two holes on the stat and the temps are hovering around 165*-175*. Is that ok? Or should I just install a SBC 160* stat? It fits perfectly.

I don't know the answer to your question - but apparently the GTO's have 2 different water pumps. At some point near the first 500 cars, they switched to the new housing.

I just had this exact same issue a while back.

Here's a few pics.. it can be done but probably not so easy while on the car nor would I recommend it. With a bit of the dremel it can be done.. no leaks here after a few thousand miles

nope.. never took a shot of that... The only thing that seemed very different is the width and angle of the two arms (sorry for lack of a more technical word) that wing out and around to the bottom of the stat. That's where the notches had to get smoothed out.

Here is a pic of an LT1 thermostat----->

Which looks exactly like the stat that came with the new waterpump. Exactly. So does that mean I can use an LT1 160* stat? They are both reverse flow, right?

Thanks

The LT1 Hypertech stat is way cheaper than the LS1. Like $20. Someone let me know asap so I can go purchase one.

Thanks

I bought the LT1 t-stat and it wasn't the same as the '04. It was shorter. I guess I'll wait until they come out with the newer version. Or maybe modify it with the shims. I don't want to modify the waterpump like Johnny5.
