Just put my Pacesetters on today and had the same problem on my 2001 SS. Both the Y pipe and my Magnaflow catback have same diameter 2 7/8. I took both my Y pipe and the I pipe to a local exhaust guy and had him cut 1/4 inch off the Y and expand the I pipe. Dunno how they charged you a bunch of money for that cause my guy did it in like 3 minutes and didn't charge me a dime. Anyway fit was fine after the expanding. Now just need to find out where it is banging!!?!!

yeah it bangs.. The new header design is really great though. Granted we used a lift but it literally took less than 15 minutes to get the new headers into the car and bolted up hand tight. It was that easy. Do still have to loosen the steering shaft or shave the block but other than that getting the headers in was simple. The Y pipe is still less than desireable. Lots of BFH usage and had to almost take off the catback to get it to fit together. The new "Bolt tab" that they added to the driver's side that should fit up to one of the body bolts to keep the Y more stable, didn't even come close to reaching the bolt it should go to. So we just cut it off. Will definately have to do some more adjustments to get rid of the banging. My advice,, Buy the headers they are great!!! Go somewhere else for the Y pipe

Did your y pipe look like this?

http://www.texas-speed.com/images/newPacesetter3.jpg

This is from TSP post in the sponsor forum. My y pipe looks like that. If you look at the "I", it appears to be 2 7/8 tubing. The side that is connected to the y pipe has been expanded. the section in the middle, appears untouched. And the outlet that goes to the exhaust, looks like it has been compressed.

I don't have calipers, the outlet of mine measures, 2 13/16 (OD).

I am wondering if you ypipe looks the same, or maybe they forgot to "compress" that section on some y pipes. I know someone else has installed this new y pipe and they said it went on easily?

I have to disagree
The Y does not bang at ALL for Hourang.
We didn't have to losen the steering shaft, we just grinded the tab on the block down
The bolt tab buttet right up to the heat shield bolt perfect, we didnt use it tho.

I think your problem with the Y is where it merges the left and right parts together, that has to go in pretty far, if it doesnt go in all the way, it will cause some banging.

Hrm, your wondering why i was charged money and your car bangs and mine doesnt at all?? not even close to banging. we did not just have then fix the ipipe section, they removed the whole ypipe, expanded all the joints, fit it in the right way, no banging, the mounts all lined up, they did a great job, had 2-3 guys working on it for an hour trying to remove it and bang it into postition, money well spent.

and NO bending of the pipes to get it positioned right, the slip fits needed to be expanded in order to position the ypipe the way it was intended to be.

Default Pipe expander

When we did the Y and headers on my 99 we didn't have this problem at all. So a little warning to you 98 guys going with the Pacesetter new Y, make sure it's the right diameter before starting or get a pipe expander.

sucks

You can get the pipe expander from autzone for $25 dlls or you can rent the tool, actually is fre yo just need to leave a deposit and they return your money after you return the expander. I did the same installation this weekend.
