Default 99 Trans am engine options

So I started my 99 trans am up today after sitting for a few weeks and just installed my bbk intake and after running for about 5 mins or so it decided to destroy itself. Now my question is what engine would be good for my car? I was going to do a turbo build on the car and right now I have a set of 317 heads getting ported and a turbo cam sitting here. I was talking to a few people and they suggested the 6.0 iron block for the turbo build, I was wanting to hear what some other people think and what years should I look at for buying the engine

I'm not looking for any crazy hp numbers this was going to be a street car looking for around 600 or so on a m6.

the elite, welcome to LS1tech!

You'll tap into some pretty good experience and help here in the external engine section.

Just curious, howd the engine destroy itself exactly?
And a 6.0 iron is way I'd go

im not real sure what happened to it. After running for a few min. I heard something break loose and I shut the car down. when I did that I head all the oil hitting the ground and I have chunks of metal sitting on the ground where it came through the oil pan. I may have the engine out soon and figure out what happened but im pretty sure the engine is done and will be looking for something soon. I guess on the flip side my 3rd gen T/A will get some attention now and might get to drive that soon.

I had a very similar experience with my 99 Trans Am.. Except nothing flew out of the block.. it just exploded on the inside.
I went with an LQ9 and swapped it in. If I could do it again, I would probably do things a bit different.
The LQ9 cost about $1000 to my door, a 383 rotating assembly would have cost me about $2000 to my door. I think, if I had to do it again, I might have gone with rebuilding the LS1 and building a stroker.
Now, considering you probably can't do that... I'd still at least rip apart that iron block and put in some better rods, pistons, etc.

I am a little on the fence still about what to do with the 6.0 block that I have. Right now I have a bare block but have the rods pistions and crank sitting off to the side. I already have a set of 317 heads in the shop getting a mild port job done and a turbo ll cam because I was going to turbo the ls1. I hate to build a stock bottom end and then blow it apart with boost down the road but don't know if it is worth getting high dollar rods and pistons. The plans for the car is to be a street car with around 600 to the wheels. I think more then that might be a little overkill for the street...
