Default dip stick reads way high.

i installed this list of stuff on a 5.3l. i looked on her and read that they take 5.5-6qts so i put 5 in and checked it and it's reading at least 2" over the hashmarks on the dip stick. did i get something wrong or what am i missing?

nope, in fact we noticed it before the engine even had coolant in it. we just finished swapping it into a '94 shell. poured in the oil and cranked if a few times to prime everything up, then fired it for a couple minutes to make sure it ran. checked oil after than and it was reading way full.

i gather that, all those part numbers say they are for a LS f-body.

if i'm using that oil pan (P/N 12628771 LS1 F-Body Oil Pan Camaro Firebird) what dip stick/tube part numbers match it?

You put the f body stuff on an iron block?
I had the opposite issue with an 02 vette winged pan, dipstick, tube, etc on a 6.0 LQ9. It's supposed to hold 6.5 qts, but had 8 in it and still wasn't up to the mark.
I just put in 6.5 qts, remarked the dipstick.

I have a similar problem with my car. LS3 with the original LS1 pan. Later ordered replacement tube & dipstick from dealer lookup and now 6qts is significantly above the hash mark. They did release an updated F-body oil pan (I have one in storage) which uses a different oil filter... perhaps they sent me a tube/stick which matches the newer style pan

Your part numbers are correct. The current pan for the F-body is the same and carries the same part number-but the oil filter thread is different. All else should be the same.

Thank you for your confirmation Paul. good to know i didn't mess up when ordering parts, but what the hell on my dipstick being like 6" too long.

if all the pans are the same other than the threads for the filter, then they must have changed the dipstick at some point or went to a shorter tube.

IMO, since you know where the "full" mark on the dipstick should be, just use a utility knife and scratch the new full mark on the dipstick.

i think that's what i'm going to do.

i'll probably cut it down to a couple inches below the full mark, then tape that spot off and scratch it up a little to mark that spot.

While I was under the hood this morning I took a snapshot of the length and PN of my dipstick. My last 6qt fill comes to the 'R' in 'Range' on the stick.

For those where the oil level is correct on their dipstick, does this match your dimensions and PN? I don't know where the PN is located on the tube or if I can see it while it's installed. For some reason I seem to recall the length of the hash being longer on the original dipstick, but my factory parts manual says this is the original part number.

At this point I can only think it could be a wrong tube or inadequate drain time

I have the Holley 302-1 oil pan and using the L92 dipstick and my full mark is about where the "T" is in operating. My oil pan holds 5 1/2 quarts.

Folks, for what it's worth, I have the above listed "new" dipstick tube for my Firebird and it seems to have the bolt bracket in a spot that makes no sense. I'll try to find the original and compare the two. As my garage is no longer experiancing sub-freezing temps, I'm getting back into my mess of an engine project.
