You might want to check out a set of stepped headers. I believe Kooks recomends anything over 450rwhp you should step up to stepped headers, but I'm not sure you would need to go all the way to 1 7/8 with a 388.

If your goal is maximum peak HP, then go with stepped headers. Otherwise, if you're looking for strong low to mid-range, I'd stay with 1 3/4.
1 7/8 are better suited for 422+ big cubes engines.

I would LOVE to see a full length 1 5/8th header with 3 inch merge collector. I think people tend to go too big on headers. I bet a street engine (idle to 6400rpm) would see big torque increases from a properly built 1 5/8th longtube...

its a 4.130" bore X stock 3.622" stroke engine. As I said, I'm looking to make 500rwhp but more than that isn't a big deal and I'm not really up to pay $1000+ for new headers unless its REALLY going to get me something (thus if the 1 3/4" headers are going to work then I'll stick with them).

I already have the 1 3/4 to 1 7/8 edelbrock. 1 1/2 is way too small for an LS1 (especially my 385) but a full 1 5/8 would be great for a stock cubed motor that doesnt go above 6600rpm.
