Default Fast 102 without a tune.

So I'm thinking of going with a Fast 102 intake and selling the LS6 intake on my 98 Z28 now. I have an appointment for my car to get a head and cam swap in mid November and was wondering if I could get away with driving the car untuned until that happens? The car already has oversized port heads and an MS4 cam so drivability is already pretty bad- would the 102 make it even worse? I'm just considering daily driving the car until November untuned since that would be happening in November anyway. Bad idea?

Yes. With a stock cam the fast still won't drive the best being a 102. If you have a cam especially one that large it will drive horrible. I did it with a milder cam and still had to touch up the tune to drive it for a few weeks till I could get it to a real tuner

Stock Cubes I would go 92mm but you will benefit from the 102 either way.

I'm confused. Do you have a tune in the car right now for the ported heads and MS4 cam? If so, you could probably get away driving the car with the FAST 102mm intake, but only if the care was previously tuned.

Yes the car has been tuned for the MS4 and the heads by the previous owner. I just wanted to emphasize I already deal with bucking and surging just because of the cam I have.

What I;m wondering is if installing the 102 would render the car almost undrivable if I don't have it tuned immediately.

Also, this presents another question. What is the cheapest way to get a compatible MAF for this setup? I dont like the idea of paying nearly 300$ for a 100mm MAF but at the same time I dont want to neckdown too much either. The car currently has an 85MM BBK throttlebody.

You could opt to go SD tune and get rid of the MAF altogether. Intakehoses.com has a coupler that will connect from your TB to the neck of you lid.

Pros and cons? The car is a daily driver and Im after it being as streetable as possible, not a track car. Im just trying to maximize the value of the tune I know is coming in November and get a 102 setup prior to that one.

Could also use a card/slot style maf sensor.

Your appointment isn't that far away, so just buy the 102/102 combo and stick it on there. See how it drives.

I normally vote for keeping the maf especially on milder setups. However when it comes to a big cam a GOOD speed density tune will actually make it drive better than a maf tune

Well the final setup will be a MUCH more mild Tony Mamo specced cam in the 226/232 range and a set of his MMS 220 heads.

Then wait to install the fast102 so you can have it mamo-fied, too.

In all honesty, if your tuner is good and the tune is spot on, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a car that has the MAF and one that doesn't. My car is not a daily driver, but it easily could be.

Didn't I suggest this a while back but you said it was to expensive? Lol

I would wait and install it all at once.

if thats the case i would just keep the maf. a sd tune wont magically make more power. an optimized maf tune will be just as good as a sd tune and the maf will compensate to keep the fueling in line if things go a little off. you can easily build a quality 100mm maf for under 100 bucks btw.

i vote to mamofy the intake as well if you can

I think everyone is basically saying the same thing, wait to install the intake and get it all tuned at the same time. Anytime you are making changes to how much air or fuel your engine is digesting you should have it tuned to keep the AFR balanced. I would think to get the most out of Fast 102, you would need comparable sized MAF/TB.
