My experience with K&N FIPK
This is not a thread bashing the K&N FIPK but I am just sharing my experience with it and this might just be an isolated incident. When I first bought my car, it ran a 13.40 @ 104 at DA=2000'. I thought something was wrong with it since its a 6 speed with 4.10 gears, mild cam, stock manifolds, and ported 241s. I was looking for what might be killing my time and thought about the K&N FIPK. Due to its design, it is not enclosed like the stock airbox and has the potential to breathe hot air in the engine bay. I decided to take off the FIPK and install the stock lid and coupler back onto the engine. I took the car to the track this weekend with a similar DA and it ran 12.80 @ 110. The only change in between the two track runs was installing the stock airbox. This leads me to believe that the K&N was killing my time so I wanted to share my experience in case anyone was going through the same confusion. I can't wait to try an SSRA and SLP/FTP Lid to see if I can pickup another tenth or two.
With a lid setup I typically see cars IAT at or near ambient when moving.
The POS K&N typically hangs IAT temps over 100*F and heat soaks when not moving. A lid also looks like it would smooth the airflow towards the TB more which could lead to increased velocity at higher RPMs.
And if you install a ram air setup under the lid there is even more to gain.
I have the same problem with my cars cone filter. In 60* ambient temps its often sitting around 95*F until the car has been moving for some time.
