Default 5k to spend

Let me first start off by saying that I posted this here because i thought most of the things recommended would be under this category. Anyway, ive been saving up some cash to finally put into my 98 ta. Ive got about $5000 to put into it before spring time when I can really drive it (I live in Illinois so im keeping it garage kept for the winter). Anyways, everything is stock. The only thing ive really done to is cut off the muffler and put in a new sound system. Im open to any suggestions, im just trying to get the most bang for my buck. Please help me.

this is a pretty good list. you can throw in some misc. boltons like pulleys and stickier tires and of course youll need to get tuned.

Everything is stock. Its an automatic transmission. Im trying to get more power. I understand that when I increase the power im going to have to upgrade other parts so it doesn't "blow" up. Ill be doing some of it myself like the air intake and easy bolt-ons but that's it. The other major stuff I will have a friend do it so laborwont cost too much. Any suggestions on what type of headers, exhaust, etc?

I would do a stall-3500-4000 range depends on what you want.

1 7/8 long tube headers speed eng are best bang for the buck IMO

Nice y pipe with 3.5" cutout
Under drive pulley.

Ls6 intake or equivalent or better

Change your gear to 3.42 or higher depends on what you want.

Dyno tune.

Some suspension parts to help keep traction.

And if you have enough money left over maybe 243 heads and a nice cam

The y pipe will support more than enough for you right now. I'd look into a good stepped header into y into a nice cat back.

OP,

With you having an auto, the first thing i would upgrade is the tranny. Spend the money on building a strong transmission. Thats what j would do first. Hit up FLT since your in Illinois.

Than get a lid, headers, catback. You can find those used in classifieds. That would be a great start.

But upgrade your tranny first.

Yup. FLT lvl 4 or maybe a performabuilt lvl 2 with a good stall PLUS a trans cooler.
You will still have more then enough cash left for 1 7/8" LT's with a Y-pipe from speed engineering.
That will still leave you with around a grand to spend on rear tires, a tune and you will have a solid 12 second car.

Seems so hit and miss. Some guys go forever on the stock trans, while others fry it first pass out with any kind of power.

Knowing what I know now, a big stall in a healthy trans would have been my first mod.

Check the mods in my sig, i believe everything i have done is under 5k and that includes Trans labor and slight upgrades.. shooting for 11.99 with stock internal.. times are in my sig also, my 60 ft was weak though.. I'm hoping a better 60 ft, some skinnies up front, and underdrive pulley get me there. Not bad for 125k mile ls1..

The new Hooker Blackheart True Dual stainless steel exhaust looks interesting at $706. Will need modifying if used with anything other than the Hooker 1-3/4" and 1-7/8" stainless steel mid-length headers, but doesn’t look like it would be hard to adapt to any long tube header.

Wow thanks everyone. Honestly didn't expect this many replies. I think since it's winter here and I plan on not driving it too much im just going to hold off on the trans for now. Hopefully ill have enough saved up so when the time comes to finally drive it, if the tranny blows I'll have enough saved up through the winter. I think im going to do a full exhaust and air intake and go from there. My friend recommended an off-road y pipe with a cutout and then get it tuned so it passes emmisions. any thoughts? Sorry if I ask "stupid" questions, im trying to invest my money wisely.

Bolt ons, stall, gears(if needed),cam, tune...see what you have left over and save it incase you blow a rear or trans. Then heads.
