Default Thermostat housing doesn't sit flush with water pump

I just bought a new ACDelco water pump 252-846 and the two piece thermostat setup 15-11057 for my 2001 z28. From what I understand this is the ls2 pump, the part numbers cross reference to an fbody ls1 and the 04-06 gto.

The thermostat housing with the supplied thermostat doesn't sit flush though. If I put my stock ls1 one piece thermostat on it does sit flush with the new water pump. Is this normal or do I need a different thermostat? I can tighten the bolts down and it'll sit flush but I'm worried it might be the wrong tstat or be opening part way if I bolt it down anyways.

I went through this a couple months ago mixing/matching unknown stuff. Sorry, don't remember the exact details. You can go to Rock Auto and look at t'stats for different vehicles, they give the OA length dimensions. IIRC, I had to get a C6 stat cause it was 1/4" shorter...
