remove the radiator, shifter, tranny crossmember, intake manifold, water pump, and maybe the crank pulley, and the entire engine/tranny will come out the top while bolted together. Removing the hood makes it easier also, and you will need an engine hoist (can rent those from local industrial tool supply companies)

Also need a tranny slip yolk or some sort of splined plug to seal the back of the tranny when you remove the driveshaft, otherwise all of the tranny fluid will dump out the rear.

I work at GM Dealership and we like to take off the whole front suspension and pull the motor from the bottom. I think its a lot easier from the bottom.

I guess just the whole front suspension, I have never actually taken one out from the bottom. I will find out exactly how and get back to you

IT was my understanding that GM designed them to be inserted and removed from the bottom... but of course that means having a lift and all the other goodies.

Some guys have actually used the engine hoist to lift the body of the car off of the engine and then rolling the engine out after this. Try running a search alot of good info has been said about this. That being said I pulled mine out the top doing basically what 9 ball said.

i dropped mine from the bottom with a lift. Then when rebuilding my current car, i picked up the front end with a chain hoist and rolled the suspension/motor/tranny. You should have it out of the bottom in 2-3 hours with hand tools from start to finish

A neighbor of my friend tied a hoist to the rafters in his garage and lifted his car up with the k member unbolted so he could roll the engine out from underneath the car. Unfortunately the rafters broke dropping the car in the engine. Luckily no one was hurt....but the engine. lol

if you plan to take it from the top, take the motor and trans at the same time. I had 3 kinds of hell getting the trans to part with the motor. On the same note, getting the motor out from the top is such a PITA, it will be going back in from the bottom. As stated above, GM designed these to come in and out from the bottom.

the dealerships pull the motors out the bottoms cuz with the lifts they dont even have to bother with a cherry picker, they just lift the body off. seen them do it many times when i worked there. it only makes sense they would design the cars that way specially with our cowls.

Out the bottom.. Of course we have the luxury of dropping the entire k-member/motor/trans down onto a hydraulic cart and remove it that way

Without a lift we used to use the hoist to pull the body up higher and then sneak the motor out the bottom.

I would be very careful sneaking the motor out the top, a LOT of little plugs/wires to break, scratch, etc.

Matt just told you the way I do them I Have pics to prove you can do it with out a lift and it is much easier than the top method You have to disassemble so much to get it out the top. You can get everything off of the motor and trans with air tools so much faster than with it in the car ETC if you want pics let me know I'll post them. Pimp_nas_t had a post a while back where I posted the so you can do a search use ing all post he responded to ETC...

When you guys are using a hoist to pick the body up and pull everything out through the bottom where are you hooking the chains? I have pulled mine out the top and it's not too bad, but I would like to see how easy it is out the bottom next time.

I thought out the top was kinda easy, I can't imagine out the bottom if it's that much easier.
