Default worth the time or not?

I found a 2005 vortec motor. 4.8/5.3L. I no its a 4.8L. I can have it for free, ran good, I just got to remove it from the truck. Anyone out there think its worth saving? I have a 95 Trans am with a rebuilt LT1. My LT1 is maxed out now with stock rods. I either need to beef up my old LT1 with new crank, rods, pistons or save this 2005 vortec 4.8L and make it a 5.7L, build it over the next few years. What would u guys do? This car is going to be my life time project car passing it on to my now 2 year old son. End result being 500 hp to wheels with room to grow. I guess main question would be bore and stroke the 4.8L/5.3L motor or buy new crank, rods, pistons for LT1?.
