Default Problem driving me nuts

I am having a problem with my '02 WS6 T/A that I cannot figure out. Last summer as I was exiting the highway to slow down at the light, the engine shut off. Just as if the key had been turned off. All other electrical systems were still working normally. I coasted to the side of the road and turned the key off. I turned the key to start and the engine fired right up. I drove it a couple of miles, then the same thing happened again. This occurred 7 or 8 times until I made it home. The next day, I fired up the engine and hooked up my scanner. There were no codes thrown and no pending codes listed. Now the engine will fire up and the car will run for about 2-3 minutes and then it will shut off. I have replaced the O2 sensors, checked all ground connections. I can find no burned wiring or bad connections of any kind. Some research I was doing suggested that the crankshaft position sensor may be defective. I replaced that, no change. It's been 6 months and I am getting nowhere. Has anyone had this issue ? Any suggestions ?

That is a strange issue. Two things came to mind. One was to check the battery terminals to see if you could be loosing a connection or shorting anything out. Second thing that came to mind was VATS, however I was under the impression that once the BCM allows the car to start it will continue to allow the PCM to run the car if a fault is detected after starting, but I am not sure.

Go simple, see if fuel pump is shutting off.

You say "just like the key was turned off". Is the cluster powering down as well? If so, I'm looking at ignition switch, ignition relay, and all associated wiring to and from, etc. Is it shutting down when the steering wheel is turned or turning? Will it shut down if you let it idle in the driveway without moving it? Need more info.

Tried replacing the fuel pump relay and the ignition relay. No luck. I have a fuel gauge installed, I have a constant pressure of 60psi throughout the ordeal. All electrical systems work normally right after the engine shuts down.

If it's only happening off throttle, this can be a bad idle air controller (carbon build up).

I had an older buick that would die like that. Off throttle and slowing down. It was the crank angle sensor. My sister had a bonneville doing the same thing - randomly shutting off instantly. Took it to a shop and they said everything tested fine and to try a different ecu. Swapped ecu's and it still happened. The whole time I'm telling my dad to tell the shop to replace the crank angle sensor. They said it was fine so my dad didn't do it. 3 months later he tells them to replace it. It never died again.

I had a similar problem. My car would randomly turn off on the middle of the highway, I don't remember if my foot was on or off the gas. It was hard to start but would restart after it shut off. It turned out that a mouse ate some of the wires behind the intake. The crank position sensor and a few ground wires were included in this mess so when something stopped making contact, puff. I don't know if this is your issue but I guess it's worth taking a look. Good luck.
