Default High torque starter

Still rocking the original starter from 99’ and I think it wouldn’t hurt to swap out before it leaves me in a parking lot one day. I’d like to get a high torque one and wondered if anyone had any ideas of what will fit. There are several options online. Car has 1-7/8 ARH headers with 3” collectors.

Unless you have a crazy high-compression engine, why would you do such a thing? If it ain't broke, don't fix it...but if you are going to replace it for peace of mind, just get a factory replacement and be done with it.

Motor is 11.7:1 but I’d still like a high torque one even though the stock one has been working it is drawing a lot of amps.

Okay, I can see the need for one.

Why does it matter if draws a lot of amps...its only for 1 full second....then it shuts off....

It resets my trip odometer every time which is an annoyance more than a issue. But it shouldn’t do that. It also does struggle slightly sometimes it barely turns the car on.

Yes. The car never doesn’t start it just kind of rumbles on sometimes. Never really barks when it fires up.

I can tell you that I had a Powermaster XS Torque starter that was working great. Years ago when I swapped from Grotyohann headers to ARH 1.75's, it wasn't compatible. I had to make a surprise run to the stealership to buy a new OEM starter to complete the header replacement. I was grumpy that day.

Was it the kind that you could clock? What made it not fit? Looks like most are smaller. I know the stick one is a hell of a chore to snake in around these headers.

This was years ago and I don't exactly remember, sorry ... it was when Mike Norris was still in Florida. When he attempted to get the PS primaries in, the tubing and the starter wanted to occupy the same final resting space.

MSD makes a clockable one. 325 ish from summit. My stock one was struggling to start mine also, had the same resetting issue.

Have not had a chance to figure out if new one will reset, but it draws 2-3x the amps of the stock one.
