Sure it's possible, but there's a lot more to be had by doing a complete setup with headers and whatnot

Right on, but being in California im not really trying to run into any headaches. Reading on other threads JBA shorties would be a good option but would it even really be worth it to replace the stock headers with them?

Good old California lol. Sucks you guys have to deal with their crap with emissions and all. You mention a ORY? Won't not having cats be a problem? Running that muffler and those tips are no problem for an exhaust shop to do. In my opinion the shorty headers really aren't worth the money

Yup exactly, lol and I never really knew off road pipes weren’t catted till now to be honest as I said im new.. so now ill either do a catted y or say f it, cash out, and go full exhaust. Hopefully I learn how to install and take off longtubes if I do decide on getting them to avoid paying a couple more hundred for a “smog” but will see. Thanks for the help!

You would need a complete manifolds into cats into OEM Y-pipe for your "legal" setup, then longtubes into ORY-pipe for your alternate setup. Sure you wanna go that far?

A quality set of long tubes and a catted y will work good together. The high flow cats on my ARH Y pipe really smoothed things out...tone wise. Maybe it's me, but I feel my setup is not suffering from using cats. Haven't noticed any dip in performance compared to an ORY. Little less rasp and alot less exhaust fumes as well.

Long tubes are not legal in Calif., as the converters must be VERY close to their original location. Long tubes prevent that.

I think the EPA regs say that the cat has to be within 3 inches of the original location.

I think you're right. I knew it was somewhere around there. That said, I don't know of ANY longtubes that would place the converters that close to the OEM location.
