Default Starter problems after switching to T56

Hello all, I have a 2003 5.3 engine from a Silverado in my 240sx, and was using an NV3500 before. I had the NFW1050 flywheel, with an "older style" (10 spline) clutch kit, and a Silverado 2500 6.0 starter. Everything worked great!

I recently switched to a T56 with an LS7 flywheel and clutch kit, and now the starter will sometimes not engage. When I hit the starter button, it sounds like it spins, but doesnt go out far enough to engage the flywheel or something. I have to put the car in gear, rock it back and forth, and then it will engage and start up. Sometimes it will start up fine on the first try though.

I haven't removed the starter itself yet to check the teeth, but does anyone know what might be causing the problem? I remember comparing the 2 flywheels on my bench and they had the same tooth count, same diameter, and same height from crank mounting face to teeth (if that makes sense). I considered switching to the "correct" starter for my engine, a 5.3 truck starter, but aren't the 6.0 and 5.3 starters basically identical? What could be going on here?

Get a junkyard 5.3 starter and see if things improve. That way you're not out much, except of course the time spent switching them

If everything was working fine before I would think there may be a loose power wire or bad ground not allowing full juice to get to the starter/solenoid. I would trace your steps back in the wiring. If the starter is indeed dying, a few hammer whacks can give it a little more life until you get a replacement.

i didnt think of the starter actually starting to die, its only a few years old. i bought it brand new back in the beginning of 2016. I took the starter off to look at the teeth and they seemed fine, normal wear and tear. it was pretty dirty in there though, so i cleaned it up and put some white lithium grease on the shaft the gear slides on. maybe it coincidentally started hanging up when i swapped trans? Once I get the engine back in the car, ill see what happens. having to buy a new starter wouldnt be a big deal, but that's $XX I could spend on groceries haha.

as for the wiring, now that I think of it, I did accidentally leave the starter wiring hooked up when i was lifting the car off the subframe to remove the engine and it caught and could have potentially damaged the wire. it looked fine on visual inspection though, so i just ran it.

this current build will have all new wiring though, so no worries there.
