Default Any benefit to mounting a catch can away from the motor?

I have a Mike Norris catch can, and I am curious if there is any benefit to mounting it somewhere other than the front of the bead.

If you live in a colder climate it's best to keep it near the engine so it doesn't freeze up during use. Otherwise, just put it where it fits.

Keeping it cool will make it work more efficiently. The problem is that there aren't many places to mount it where it's away from the heat and still easy to access. Putting it on the inner fender near the battery is a popular choice, but the hose routing tends to be a bit obvious which some people don't like. Mounting it to the head is just the most convenient and attractive way to do it so it's become the standard method.

I don't know. I had just read in a few places that it works better if the air has a chance to cool.

keeping the can cool, or letting the air cool before the can or both?

Two options shown here and the sealed can would be the one recommended.

Sealed is the setup I have. I might mount the can to the head, and route the hose through a powersteering fluid cooler.

The point of the catch can is to trap oil condensation. To do that effectively you want the air flow to be relatively slow (larger diameter hose), the can to be relatively cool (cooler temps promote more condensation) and the flow through the can to pass over something that the condensation can grab onto (usually some type of mesh or filter material). Mounting an empty can to a hot surface with small diameter hose will do zilch for catching oil, but is a pretty common setup that people run when they don't understand the process.

so, hot air, cool can would be better than cooling the air.?

Right. You want it to condense in the can, not the cooler/hoses.

I moved mine from the common location on the cylinder head to behind the headlight and caught a lot more oil. As said you want the oil to condense, condensation happens with cooler temps, longer travel in the line makes the vapor cooler.

I am going to try mounting it kinda under the passenger headlight, between the bumper. There is a stud there that would work. Just have to cut a little out of the corner of the plastic that funnels air to the radiator.

I got all excited that I was going to catch oil when I first installed my MM catch can but I never catch anything and I never did the ls6 valley cover mod either.

How much and what size line did you run to route it there? Just wondering if your sealed catch can setup decreases your vacuum too the point it will affect the power brakes.

No issues with brakes or HVAC actuator. Doesn't seem to have any issues with vacuum. .

That's good to know and being that far away you may not catch much in the way of oil either.

I am assuming that the air having 5ft to cool a bit, line from valley cover to catch can being constantly "down hill", and catch can being cooled by air will all combine to more oil caught.

I may be completely wrong, but I have tinkeritis, and figured I'd give it a shot.
