Default 1999 Camaro Oil Pan Internal Cracks?

Hi all.

Recently dropped my oil pan for an unrelated issue and after giving it a good clean I’ve noticed the interior is full of cracks. There’s even imbedded chunks of metal in certain areas.

No sign of anything untoward on the outside. No impacts or stressed areas.

Pics as follows:

What do we think? Clean it up with a flap disc & dremel to see what’s what, or just scrap and buy a new one?

Many thanks,

Ryan

Out of curiosity was your motor running on an ethanol blend?? And did you ever have an issues where ethanol could of gotten into the oil??

Probably just crapping casting. Mine was rough inside ,I would not worry about it.

Surface cracks are normal with aluminum pans. Pits with embedded metal are cause for concern... did you spin or bearing or break a piston?

I believe those 'cracks' are just a byproduct of the casting process. Probably something contracting while the aluminum cools. As long as you can fill it and it doesn't leak you're good to go. However the pits and bits of embedded metal are, like stocker said, a cause for concern.

How is that even a question? You could fill that pan with straight ethanol and leave it there for month and it won't hurt anything. If it was an issue the aluminum fuel cell I've been using would have failed after three years of holding e85 but it still looks new.

Looks like casting issue. Though that in itself may not be of concern, the crud that finds its’ way into the crevices could be, as they release back into the oil. If you scrub the crevices and find nothing but dirty oil, you should be good to go.
