Default Air intake track sizing

Currently have a 5.3 in my 63 Chevy II with a 4" pipe from the filter to a 5 pin truck MAF. The filter is located in the engine bay, and my AIT temps are pretty high. I will be upgrading my Heads to Mamo prepped AFR 205's with 1.94 valves, a fast 92 ported by Tony, and a new cam spec'd by Tony(112-+4, 266 int/268 ex, 595/596).

When I finish the upgrade, I would like to address the intake piping. I realize I could go down to 3.5" to match the MAF, but I would like to go down to 3" to allow myself some room for routing to a fresh air source. Would I be starving the engine for air if I go down that small? Common sense says yes, but I want opinions/experiences. With the 3", I would have room to route around my radiator hose and power steering pump into a cold air box that I would build. Space is at a premium in the stock front end.

Thoughts?

I would not go down to 3". It then WILL be a restriction.

With a 90/92mm Fast intake, I'd want the 3.5 inch (89mm) or bigger.

3 inch is only 76.2 mm and will be a restriction.

Thanks guys for the confirmation. I think I have a way to get routed with 3.5", but I know the 4" will not work. This is going to be fun.
