Is my new modified 2 peice Timing Cover still Usable? Photo
Hi, this is a 2 peice cover I purchased from the USA for my 99 LS1, originally it did not fit correctly it was .025" too long which meant the oil pan gasket would have been skewed quite badly. Rather than toss the cover I carefully machined it to bring it level with the block surface, the problem is I miscalculated and now it's sits .009" below the block surface (ie: meaning below the surface with engine upside down)
My question is can I run some sealer all the way along the bottom edge of the cover where it meets the oil pan, reason I ask is I've read the LS1 pan is a stressed member so I am wondering if it is safe to do this?
The pan being a stressed member means that the pan adds ridgitity to the pan rails, tying the bellhousing assembly to the block, making the block and trans assembly a more solid piece. It bolting to the front cover adds nothing for stiffness, but is required for sealing purposes. I don’t see .009” causing any sealing issues with the cover. Make sure it’s exactly level side to side. I’d be willing to bet that a lot of inexperienced newcomers to engines have incorrectly installed both front and rear covers on their LS engines with a larger gap than your .009” without issue at the pan gasket. I’d send it if it were mine.
