I have my LQ4 installed in my S10 pickup and I want to just use the starter to spin it over.
I don't have the fusebox or PCM (or any underhood wiring) installed yet.
I know normally the power goes through a starter relay and on to the starter solenoid, so am I going to hurt the starter if I use a remote start cable to cross the batt and the "S" terminal the old-fashioned way? (and a battery to the batt and ground).?
You won't hurt anything. I have my run stand wired directly from a switch to the starter solenoid and it's been that way for years using the same starter.
Mounted another starter solenoid on the firewall near the battery and ran the power up top and looped the starter solenoid on the starter. Now I no longer have power down to the starter at all times anymore and hooking up a remote starter switch is a breeze!
And while you are at this stage, add one of those plastic tube oil pressure gauges to your engine and spin the starter vigorously to check for oil pressure. Screw in a compression tester and you will gain a lot of knowledge about your engine.
B52, That's exactly why I asked the question. I wanted to get a good circulation of oil through the motor.
I already built one of those plastic bucket/SB chevy oil pump pre-oilers and it worked OK, and I got 50lbs. pressure from that.
