Default 98 Fuel tank. F**********

So I found a G80 rear-end with a 3:42 gear in the junkyard to replace my G80 with a 2:73 gear. I figured might as well drop the tank and upgrade the pump while the rear is out. Sadly my car is a 98. So no removable filler neck on the gas tank. My question is this. HOW THE HELL DOES THAT TANK COME OUT? Ha ha. We have the car up on a lift at my buddies shop. I mean that damn thing is impossible. Fortunately we got it pulled out enough that the tank is hanging down low enough at an angle that my buddy just stood on a stool and was able to remove the gas lines and get the pump out.

So we can still get the job done. But is there a secret to getting that damn tank all the way out? I'd love to punch squarely in the mouth whoever designed that thing without a removable filler neck.

There is a long list of egregious design offenses with the F-Body platform that illicit such rage. These engineers need a good old fashioned *** whooping for some of these design choices.

There really are no angles. Regardless of how you try and turn it the tank is hitting something. Short of cutting the neck off I don't really see how it can be done. I'd love to see a demonstration of it. But you won't find that on youtube or anywhere else for that matter.

the first time I dropped my tank....removed exhaust....dropped the rear end as far as it would go....with shocks disconnected....the vid above is spot on !

you do not have to cut the exhaust like in the vid....remove pass shock and spring and slide out to the right

For my 99, the service manual says to remove passenger side rear coil, end link, and take the bolts out the torque arm to allow the rear to drop.

you can only drop the rear so far.....then the brake line would break.....unless you want to disconnect it

We've ALREADY removed the entire rear-end and exhaust off of my car. We still could not get the tank out. I think it is literally the single most ridiculous thing I have ever seen on a vehicle in my 47 yrs on this earth. I can't for the life of me figure out how the **** they got it in the car at the factory. I'll take a picture on Saturday when I go over to my buddies to finish it. At least the tank is hanging low enough we were able to get the fuel pump out to replace it with my Racetronix I bought.

Remember guys my car is a 98. So it has the metal tank. So the filler neck cannot be removed. Which is what makes dealing with it a million times worse.

You dont remove the tank, you cut a trap door.
Let me know if ya want the measurements for cutting.

That's ghetto. There is a right way to do things and hacking holes in your floor isn't it.

There is the right way to do things. Then there is also the smart way. My real door mod came out very nice and works well. Took 10 minutes. Dropping the tank is a waste of time. Trapdoor also allows ease of service or pump replacement in the future.

I've seen it done nicely enough on occasion but most of the time it's a hack job of a repair that I've never liked.

Is that pic from a 98 model? Because I believe that the cut for a 98 is different.

You have any pics of yours? I've seen a million different examples. Its not ideal but it does make it far more easy to access the pump in the future if you need to.

You could not be more wrong. Nothing ghetto about that. Clean and straight. 90% of vehicles have a trap door from the factory.

Cut like the pictures shown above but follow the hard lines and cut a bit more on the top left to access the connections there easier. Cut as much needed before you break the seal of the pump.

I'm not wrong. Does the service manual have you cutting holes in the floor? No, it does not. Do you now have a squishy spot in your carpet where metal used to be? Yes you do. (Unless you make a door for it, or repair the hole in some way.) A faster method doesn't make it the right method. A hole in my floor is not desirable to me. I'd rather do a bit of extra work and avoid that. How many fuel pumps have you gone through where this is a real concern? I've had three fourth generation F-Bodies and six third generation cars..I've had to replace a fuel pump once in two decades of owning these cars. I've also only ever bought one of these cars that had the floor cut like that. None of my friend's that have had these cars had floors cut this way either. That tells me that fuel pump replacements aren't all that common for these cars.

I get it if the car's a full race build or something. At that point you need the car back in action quickly should the pump fail. Full on race builds typically have a lot of cutting done to the body anyway. But short of that, I wouldn't do it.
