Default Cold start rattle

Ever since I money shifted my car 3-2 I've heard this a rattle only on cold starts that sounds like you're shaking some nuts and bolts around in a tin can back and forth. I wouldn't describe it as a tick at all. I made a thread similar to this a few months ago but I dont think I mentioned the rattle and I've decided to stop being lazy and fix it. I used to think there was a loss of power but now I'm not sure if it was just in my head or not. I replaced my pushrods even though they didnt look bent, and the valve springs seem fine. My first thoughts were lifters or valves but on another forum someone thought for sure I blew an exhaust header gasket. Could this produce the same sound? Theres also a fairly loud hissing noise from the engine but that may be an unrelated issue that was there previously. 2000 trans am

I forgot to mention this but I did perform a compression test and the numbers were near perfect. Cracked piston would screw that up pretty bad wouldn't it?

Not if it's a cracked skirt, where it would not compromise compression.

hmm. Dont you think if it were bad enough to rattle about 5 months ago it would have snapped off by now? The car is a daily driver and it doesnt seem like the rattle has gotten worse.

I don't think there is any way to predict that. It might have cracked far enough to relieve whatever stress riser came up, and hasn't gone further... much...

well as far as I know theres no real way to check so I guess I just have to hope it doesn't get worse if that's the case. If something does happen it'll be a happy little excuse for an LS3 swap haha...

Doing a little poking around my engine bay I noticed my crank pulley has a bit of a wobble to it. It's a little hard to hear over the exhaust and my car was warm so it wasnt very pronounced but it sounded like a slight rattle around that area? Could a wobbling crank pulley make a noticeable vibration and rattle on cold starts? Something to do with thermal expansion?

That would be a much nicer thing to fix than a cracked piston. I'll start with that then, thanks.

Actually, I'm now almost sure it's piston slap. Sounds very similar to this video:
Seems bad that it would only occur after an over-rev, but I guess I'm not too worried if it goes away after 10 seconds or so. Might try thicker oil

Not sure if thicker oil will fix that...... The top half of your piston never sees oil, so I would think oil viscosity would not make a difference. With that being said.... I have tried the euro blend 0W40 Castrol syn oil and I still get the slap, but it is not as loud,

So who the hell knows

Kind in same boat.

my car is a4 and I hit a bump causing car moving at 30mph to shift from drive to Neutral....im an idiot and had my hand close to shifter.

No negative besides similar noise and a hiss thats been there since before that.

Car just sounds quieter . Maybe because I switched from dumped duals to an actual catback

Butt dyno ofcourse is no help.

Does your exhaust seem low in volume too?

I found that the hissing noise was a blown PCV hose, you probably also have a vacuum leak like I did. For some reason the rattle seems to have quieted down a lot. I dont think it's related at all but who knows...
