Exclamation Another exhaust thread! Question regarding '02 Z28 setup

I appreciate the thoughts in advance.

I'm in the process of finalizing my Z28's (auto/2.73 gears) setup. It's going to be one of the following Speed Engineering setups:
  • 1) LT Headers w/ True Duel Exhaust Setup (X-Pipe)
  • 2) LT Headers with ORY mated to my factory stock exhaust setup (on the Z28 it's a single pipe to muffler with two tips)
There's pros/cons to both. I guess my biggest question is am I leaving a SIGNIFICANT amount of power on the table by going with option 2? I suspect some, but from what I've gathered much of the inefficiency is the stock headers and Y-pipe setup. Also this would remove the cats, so I suspect there may be some gains there as well. That said I really like the look for the black tips from the factory, so it would allow me to retain that. My car has ZERO chrome.

As a third option I suppose I could take option 2, add a muffler and dump it, but as a convertible that sounds like it may have some consequences.

Thoughts? I really appreciate it.

EDIT: no emissions state!

The stock muffler will be a choke point for your free-flowing exhaust, so I would rule out Option 2.

True duals would flow best, but they are more expensive and will add weight. Will the extra hp make up for the added weight? Plus a fair number of guys install duals and then are not pleased with the increased noise level.

A good flowing muffler like a Hooker Maxflow (single outlet) or Hooker Aerochamber or Magnaflow (dual outlet) will give you some hp compared to stock, but won't cost a lot or add any weight. I like this option myself.

Thank you!

So are you suggesting that I go with Option 2, but instead of mating to my factor muffler/tips I remove that and instead install a new muffler? At that point I wonder what would be best for the tip situation? I suppose if it's ran all of the way to the end of the car I could either a) do a center outlet or b) dump it a bit before that. Thoughts?

I appreciate the help!

EDIT: for clarity sake, do we think retaining the stock muffler and tips would be extremely detrimental? Again I really like the look, I won't be able to copy that without doing true duels and then painting/powder coating those tips OR having something fabbed up which at that point will equal the true duel cost I'm sure.

You just graft your existing tail pipes and tips on to the new muffler. It may take a little tweaking but any exhaust shop can do it.

For example, I have the stock tips on the Maxflows on my G8. Looking at it from the rear, you could never tell they're not the stock mufflers.

From what i've seen, true duals really shine when you start getting into the engine itself. Cam, heads, even a larger CI motor. They will produce more power on a bolt-on car than a y-pipe setup but there are some trade-offs listed by Rev. Looking back I wish I would have gone with your option #2 but with a cutout after the merge for track purposes and such. Right now I have a dumped XR1. Stupid loud but not terrible.

You could always run LTs to an offroad Y to a 3" pipe to a 3" electric cutout then from there use the rest of the factory exhaust. It will be very quiet with the cutout shut

Thank you!

I've decided that I'm going to do LT>ORY>3" piping>Hooker Aerochamber Muffler>Tip

Given the reliability of electric cutouts, and the fact I'm located in MN, it just isn't a good long-term mix. Moreover let's be honest, it would be open all the time

Texas Speed catback with your SE headers and y-pipe would get my vote.
