Default Exhaust brackets/braces snapping with cammed motor

Hi Guys,

im currently having issues with my custom over the axle duals which are basically a copy of the speed engineering system. For those familiar with the SE duals, there is a bracket/brace which joins the 2 pipes together where it rises up to go over the axle. As my motor is cammed and lopes a lot at idle, the exhaust shakes a bit and it keeps snapping the welds on that bracket. I had it redone and an extra bracket welded after the over the axle bend to try and take some stress away. Both of these have snapped today. The exhaust hangs on rubber hangers and has plenty of wobble so it’s not fixed solid so in theory shouldn’t be overly stressed on welds.. Anybody got any recommendation for me to stop this happening?

Raise the idle a bit.

Where is it breaking? On the weld bead itself or is the material being welded doing the breaking?

It initially broke the stainless steel plate. Cracked clean in two. Must have been like a stress fracture or something. Since then, the breaks have always been on the weld bead on the original bracket and on the newer second bracket it was another clean break / crack of the stainless metal not the weld.

ill struggle to get that done here (UK). Not many LS tuners
out here. They’re few and far between. I can certainly look into getting the car booked in with one at some point if you think it will really help. Idle currently approx 850.

I would consider maybe a thicker set of brackets although then it may just rip the tube it is welded too rather than the bracket itself.

Have you checked your motor mounts? Excessive slop there could definitely cause issues.

There is also the possibility your axle is bumping it under hard compression.

^^^That was my guess, also check the trans mount.

Yeah, definitely sounds like motor mounts are gonna be the better fix if it's torquing so much that it's snapping the exhaust brackets. If the motor is moving that much at idle I can only imagine what it looks like at WOT.

I was going to suggest, if you haven't already done so you may want to swap to poly motor mounts. Being rubber, and as old as they are I'm sure if you still have stock mounts there's probably a ton of slop in them which will move both the exhaust AND intake piping a lot and bang/break stuff.

You should consider some quality bellows somewhere in the exhaust if you don't already have them. They're made for this issue.
