Default FAST 102 cowl clearance on 4th gen

I've been considering buying a FAST 102/102 for my car and have been trying to do as much research as possible before pulling the trigger. Recently found a video where a guy said he had to partially drop the K-member to install the intake, and found one or two other people mention it here on LS1tech. Anybody else with a 4th gen and a FAST 102 that has run into this issue? I have newer stock engine mounts and aftermarket PRC heads..not sure if these heads would raise the intake up slightly or not, but that might be the final straw when considering a FAST 102 for me..I can deal with having to buy more stuff to make it work and the small annoyances of getting it to fit...but I just got done dropping this engine in and putting the trans back in laying on the floor with jackstands, the last thing I want to be doing is having to drop the cradle for an intake manifold swap.

My Fast LSXR intake manifold had two broken runners and we didn't find until after it was re-installed. The shop pulled it without having to drop the K member etc to replaced the broken runners and then reinstalled.

I've installed/removed my 102 on my 00' Hawk several times with no issue at all.

I did cut the bottom off the plastic pins that hold the cowl molding on because it looked like I got into a fight with a racoon and lost.

I'm not sure what the plastic pins people talk about are, I didn't seem to notice any..and i've had my intake on and off off twice so far, maybe the shop that pulled the intake and heads a few years ago to change lifters removed them when they worked on it. Would be nice if someone had a measurement on the height difference between an LS6 and fast 102 though..from the valley cover to the highest point.

The LS6 intake measures approx 6" tall, and the 102mm measures approx 7.25.

Is there an issue with the FAST LSXr 102 in the 4th Gen TA? I didn't have an issue in the SS.

this is the video i randomly stumbled on the other day, fast forward to the 1:40 mark...after seeing that I jumped on google and found a few other people on LS1tech saying they had to do the same thing which is what prompted this thread.

I'm thinking the car being lowered contributed to this issue?

how would a suspension drop affect the position of the K member, engine mounts and engine though?

Nonissue on the TA also. You just get more scratches on your arms from the plastic Shark Teeth screws that hold the cowl down. Seriously. I had people ask me for about a week after my first 102 install - hey, you get mauled by a cougar?

There are some other tricks like using electric tape to hold the four rear bolts up and making sure not to break the OPSU with the brake booster vacuum line.

Just an update, bought a ported fast 102 from tony mamo, put it on a few days ago and went pretty smooth. Intake dropped right in without any cowl clearance issues like i feared. Bought the LS2/3 fuel rails from tony also with the spacers and fasteners, a map sensor extension harness to move it to the front and a 4" 22 degree bend silicone coupler, and a NW 102 throttle body. Had a new 85mm maf already so decided to use that with the harness adapter and a 98mm lid. Had to fight with the fuel rails a little to get the bracket holes to line up with the intake but eventually got it on and was able to reuse my 50lb deatchwerks injectors with the supplied fast O rings. Already bought a new waterpump which is the updated LS2 version but still had to grind the rear edge of the water pump a little where the snout of the intake was touching, also bent down the coolant crossover until it cleared. Bought a small rubber vacuum elbow for the HVAC vacuum line in the rear since this intake has the port coming stright out in the back. Was able to reuse the PCV lines from my LS6 intake and stretched the brake booster hose a bit and it hooked right up. Aside from the pain in the *** of reaching the passenger rear intake bolt it wasnt all that bad. Started it up but it wouldnt idle with the new MAF so i temporarily rigged up my old maf and snugged down the clamp so it would be tight in the 4" coupler. With the old maf and a small adjustment of the set screw on the TB it fired right up and idled. Just have to swap the fuel pump and get it to the tuner now.

Hahaha!!! Same happened to me! I think I have scars. I plan to grind the pins when the new engine is going in.

Yep! After removing and installing the intake 3 times, I said to hell with it and cut a chunk out of the center of the cowl, made life soooooo much easier, and especially when I added the direct port. Plastics cover it and you can’t tell it is cut unless the plastics are off.

which boot did you use to connect the throttle body to the maf? it looks like a reducer

Just my $.02, but you should also plan on a larger MAF and larger tubing to the filter. Otherwise, you are just creating restrictions. A 4.5" MAF housing with air straightener will flow enough air for a 102mm. 4" MAF with air straightener will not. 4" MAF without air straightener technically doesn't, but I doubt .016" matters.
