Default Valve cover gasket expanded after removal???

I pulled my valve cover to check rockers, and now the valve cover gasket is too long to go in the channel on the valve cover. WTF?

I was surprised the first time to. They all do it. If it comes out of the cover it’s ruined.

That is what I thought. I just decided to order new gaskets and rocker bolts, since some of the rockers are slightly loose, and the bolts are at 22-25 ft. lbs

Guys, is it just my imagination, or was this not an issue until about ten years ago? I remember being able to remove silicone gaskets for inspection/ adjustments and reuse them, but now it seems like after a few thousand miles, they expand.

They also don't seem to seal as well, either. Many times I will find oil seepage after awhile.

Before anyone says that this is improper installation, the valvecovers on these things are about as idiot-proof as you can get.

I suspect its modern oils + the fuel residue in the system.. The secret sauce in both has gotten pretty scary.

The valve cover gaskets are not ruined after removal. Yes, they look to be an inch too long, but they will go back in the groove if you mess with them for a couple minutes.

Yea, I noticed that too. I also noticed you have to play with them to get them to fit. Measuring a new one against an old one shows the old gasket does swell.

So, I decided to shorten the gasket. I cut the gasket in half in the middle of the top side. Then feed it in around the perimeter. When I came to the end, it was about an inch too long so I cut that off. Then I put a dab of ultra grey in the cover groove and pushed in the shortened piece. Voila, 3000 miles later and no leaks. This was with the original gasket of many years old. I was tired of putzing around with these, and I won't have to buy new gaskets again! :-)

Been a lot longer than the last 10 years. I vividly recall this being an issue 20 years ago. Probably been happening longer than that.
