Default Please help going crazy! Pulleys

Hello!

Im a new member all the way from Sweden!

I really hope some of you guys can help me before I go crazy!

I am trying to buy all the pulleys for my Ls1 camaro. Call me stupid or slow but i seems to be to much alternativs on the market and they look the same but arent the same.

Can somebody please help me with the part numbers I need so that i can get everything sorted? Buying everything from Summitracing, its easiest.

I have really tried but i cant get it sorted

Best regards Tomaz

Before anyone can help you, we need to know EVERYTHING you are dealing with.
Which engine? ALL details please.
Which car? Make, model, year.
What will you do with it? Racing, rallying, Sunday cruising, etc.

Change the pulleys to WHAT?? The stock ones do a good job.
If you are changing to full billet (for looks, they serve no other function), just get the full kit for your application.

You don't have any now? Why replace them? Worn out?
Normally not a service item.
Accessories usually include them, including alternator, water pump, power steering pump, A/C compressor.
That leaves crank pulley/dampener.
Which ones do you need?

The water pump pulley comes on water pumps. They are flat and don't wear out.
The power steering pulley comes with the power steering pump. They are stamped, and the most likely to wear out, but you say yours is good yet.
The A/C pulley is a clutch and gets changed as a unit. They rarely wear out as they are heavy steel.
Alternator pulleys are also machined metal and don't wear out.
That leaves the crank pulley which is cast iron. They don't wear out. But it is available separately.
Which one(s) do you THINK are worn?.
Serpentine belts don't wear pulleys like Vee belts do.

What do you mean "worn out"?

Are you referring to the common "pulley chirp" that most LS1s develop sometime around/after 100k miles? If so, what you'll need to replace are the two idler and two tensioner pulleys. These four are the most common to cause the chirp as they have no load (unlike the pulleys for various accessories) and the bearings tend to wear out as the factory grease wears away. Once you need one of them, you often need them all.

If this is the problem you are having (meaning the chirp), and you have already tried new belts, then I would just replace all four of these pulleys or do them in sets (meaning the idler and tensioner for the A/C system, and the idler and tensioner for the main system) with the belt removed from the other set (to determine which system is causing the chirp).

I would not replace the pulleys for various accessories unless said accessory is in need of total replacement (such as the alternator, PS or water pump, etc.) Those pulleys are not a maintenance item and should last for the life of the accessory to which they are attached.

The only issue here (in terms of finding part numbers) is that there are two different versions of the main system idler pulley depending on which alternator bracket you have. GM updated this bracket in 1999 or 2000, and there is a VIN breakpoint that I don't recall, but they also issued a TSB for this so some earlier cars might have received a replacement (newer design) bracket at some point which would require the newer pulley design. So you might have to order both and then see which one you need.

Wow thank you for that info!

So if i am ordering the four pulleys. 2 tendioner pulleys and two igler pulleys, then wich ones on summit racing should i buy?

There are like 15 tensioner pulleys to choose from 21 different idler pulleys and 15 different serpentine belts on summit racing:/ so i am a little confused of wich ones to buy :/

Look at the pictures of the idlers that might fit.
Get the one that looks like yours (remove yours first so you can get a good look).

Not sure what brands or part numbers Summit is using for these, but here are some original GM part numbers to help with your search:

Main system idler: 12563326 (this, I believe, fits the later alternator bracket - so it may or may not be correct for your '99)
Main system tensioner: 12560344 (complete assembly)
A/C system idler: 12557335
A/C system tensioner: 12560345 (complete assembly)

Some of those part numbers might be discontinued (it's been a while since I needed to order these), but they might help you for cross-reference of current available replacements.

Will get to it after work!
