Oil Pressure Sensor
I'm sure that we need a new thread on here dealing with oil pressure, haha. I have a '98 Camaro and had an interesting event this weekend. I was moving my car around in the driveway when I noticed the "check gauges" light was on. I look down and have zero oil pressure. After having an "Oh, xxxx." moment, I realized that everything sounded fine. So I shut off the engine, pulled the dipstick, plenty of oil. Next, I restart the engine and it still sounds fine. So while it was running I pulled the oil fill cap off and looked at the rocker arm that is right there below it. Plenty of oil drizzling out of it, running down to the rocker shaft, and off onto the roller wheel at the end. So oil flow looks normal to me. I have driven it 25 miles since this and it's all good. Even the gauge looks to be moving OK for not having any pressure. Key off, it goes to about the middle of the sweep. Key on, the gauge goes to the bottom red line. After the engine is started, it goes to the upper red line indicating zero oil pressure. Never moves from there.
So the question is, are the replacement oil pressure sensors total piles of junk? A bit of background here. I replaced the original LS1 from this car with a twin turbo GEN IV engine about 2 and a half years ago. The oil pressure sensor was replaced at the time I replaced the engine. Since then, about 30 months, I've failed two of these replacement sensors in different ways. One started leaking oil, enough that it was dripping off onto the ground. This one looks like it just stopped sending out a signal.
It would be nice to have a gauge that at least indicates that there is oil pressure, even if it's not perfectly accurate. I went 254,000 plus miles on the original sensor with the original engine and never had a problem. I would hope to have that situation with the new engine. So far not so much and it bugs the hell out of me driving around with a gauge that indicates zero oil pressure.
