Default Need some direction on where to start

Well, here is what happened. Luckily I was close to my house, because I noticed the check gauges light come on and then I watched the battery meter slowly drop. The dash panel started to fade and my headlights started to dim and saftey features began to turn off one at a time. Now my car has 103,000 miles and I just got the car back from the shop early that day because they had to replace an alarm casing that fell and melted on the exhaust which kept blowing fuses and wouldn't allow the car to start. Now the car is sitting in my drive way, with what I believe to be a dead battery. Any suggestions on where to start? I am not sure if the battery is bad or if it is the alternator. Did the stress from the alarm possibly damage other parts of the electrical system?

Well, I figured it out. The alternator was burned out and the battery wasn't holding a charge.
