Default got headers in!

got the dynatech header kit (with cats) for my 98SS
1st the results.. big power! makes more power everywhere.guessing 20HP..
my stk lid/cat back car would haze the f1's in 1st. now, melts the
tires to the point that it's trying to go sideways in 1st
(think drag radials are in my future)

headers fit great.
down side.
ses light is on
emission connections don't fit
y-pipe doesn't fit
i was not a happy camper well, 'till took her out for "testing"
oh, should mention my headers changed the exhaust tone.
higher pitch at idle, slightly louder. several db louder at full throttle
you could almost say it sounds meaner....

fit of y-pipe aside, good upgrade. none of my other mods have given
this kind of sotp improvement.. this is getting fun

Tell us more about the fit and the headers. Are
these the "Dynatech SuperMaxx" stainless ones?
They look all pretty in the ads and claim the Y
fits without any issues. What kind of troubles on
yours? I like these (in theory) but looking for the
real lowdown on fit, leaks, etc....

you are correct. dynatech supermaxx kit.
headers fit like a dream. didn't even have to remove the steering shaft/oil fiter/drain
plug.
header emission connections were the 1st of my problems
do the drivers side the air tube was clocked wrong and the bolt pattern was too wide
i had to drill out the bolt holes to get them to work (hole problem was for both air tubes and the egr connection. clocking issue only drivers side.)
the y-pipe where do we start? um, had to cut off the lip on the trans x-member
the dr side tube i cut about 3/4 off where it goes into the cat.
the y part was a major pita. in the distructions looks like you have all kinds of room
between the x-member and the y pipe. but, the car in the pics is an auto(mine is m6)
the way the y bends it is either too close to the floor or it hits the x-member, or you can angle it down somewhat to clear but, then you lose ground clearance and get
close to the floor pan with the other side. the worst part of the ordeal was the connection point to the cat back. mine is an ATR. this is a 3 in cat back with a sleeve
so it will seal to a stock y pipe. the dyna teck said to get a tail pipe expander (i did)
this didn't even come close to working. i don't know what size it was but it's not stock and it's not 3 in o.d or i.d this tail piece caused me an amazing amount of
grief. to the tune of 2 1/2 -3 hrs.
excluding the y-pipe issue. these are nice headers, came with ceramic cats, all gskts,
clamps, o2 extenions. welds are perfect.
i'm guessing this would fit an auto car perfect, (except for emissions, and tail pipe)

oh, i might add. for the money i expected a "bolt in" kit. this kit is not that. i understand the dynatechs are supposed to be stainless flp's find it hard to belive that.

Yeah they do look just like FLPs but in stainless instead of coated mild steel...and the cats aren't removable (as they are with FLPs) on the Dynatechs right?

you just made me think of something. no you can't just swap out cats.
(look at the pictures on their site. does not look like my cat set up at all)
in the pics i have of the kit they use the v-clamp style to retain the cat.
mine are a 4 bolt flange with a exhaust doughnut. not easy to swap out
and the off roads were not included with my kit.

Installed a set on a friends 2001 car a few weeks ago. They didn't utilize v-clamps either, same style as yours came. The off-road pipes are avaliable, but seperate from the kit and at an extra cost. Because of the clamp style of these headers, the swapping from ORP to cats and back won't be as quick as swapping them on the FLP's...but still plenty doable. My friends car was an auto and we had to remove the oil filter to get the driver side in......he was do for an oil change anyway. We didn't have any fitment issues with the AIR fittings on his thankfully. Y-pipe on his set fit without any issues other than where it connects to the I-pipe. His car previously had some FLP's on it a while back and the I-pipe had to be cut down a few inches....which, at least in the case of his Dynatech's...wasn't required for fitment...thus we had a gap we had to bridge with another piece of pipe.

I give them a thumbs-up, IMO.

Believe it... Dynatech makes the FLP line so they are the one and the same manufacturer. The two header systems are practically the same design with different materials used. The only difference is that everyone's been saying the Supermaxx can't swap out with race pipes. You can get a muffler shop to make you some though if you really want the extra couple o horses...

I put on a Supermaxx system about a month ago and I had zero snags! I did have to expand the Y-merge to fit over a 3" borla catback though... that's about it... I'm very pleased with the fitment (Lowered and zero scrappage) and was pretty happy with the install as well!

surprised yours fit but, they may be made by the same people but their not the same
kit.. look at the way the cats bolt on. yes i agree the picture looks the same
that is not the kit that came out of my box! 4-5 hours later on the y pipe alone
a broken pipe expander, lots of cussing later and i got the kit in. i'm very disapointed
in the y-pipe fit. if the headers fit anything like the y-pipe i would been on the evening news already..

Is there any way you can post pictures? I am very interested in this system but would like to see what the actual kit looks like on a car and I think it would explain your issues better as well. Thanks!

I installed the supermaxx system on my '02 Z28 a couple months back. Excellent fit, very happy with them. The only thing I had to remove for the install was the oil filter.

hmm... I have SLP headers, Y-pipe, and dual/dual catback. Clearance sucks and I seriously considered getting these SuperMaxx headers, but after reading all the issues OWENMUSTANG had, forget it! lol. Everything fit fine during my SLP install and I didn't have to modify my car to do it. I also enjoy being able to swap out my y-pipe in 15 minutes before I go out and play. I'm not saying SLP is that great, but I've already wasted too much money to buy a new set and then have issues.

funny, i didn't have to remove the oil filter.....
like posted above, headers fit great..(bolt holes a little tight but...)
my beef was the Y pipe. i had the car apart over the summer, still a pain to put back together...
