Default Water Pump gasket....

I heard there was a gasket for the water pump for the '98 models, but when I removed my water pump I didn't notice a thing.

Is this true, is there one there??

Yes ... the 97 and 98 version LS1 motors used a paper type gasket.

Subsequent years a metal/o-ring type gasket was used.

I see. Didn't even notice.

Is it possible to re-use this "paper" style gasket again or should I buy another one?

Yeah, you'll definitely need to replace the gaskets. If the newer versions work, then cool. I used new paper gaskets on mine. Clean up the mating surfaces too.
