Default MAC headers

If I can get a set of MAC midlength headers and both offroad and catted y-pipes for cheap is it worth the gain in hp or should I wait and spend the extra for long tubes? TIA

I think it's worth it if you can get them cheap enough but I would consider not using the catted Y pipe if it has Mac cats on it, supposed to be rather restrictive.
I would also consider porting the openings on the Macs for even better performance.
Macs are good LS1 headers and are somewhat under rated.

If the price is right, get them! On a basically stock car, you will see very similar gains to LTs, but as always, the difference will increase if you do a big cam and such.

They are really nice headers!

I had them long tubes and macs, and looking back the mac setup I had acutally worked out pretty nice for me so I would consider them.

I just finished a v6 to v8 swap, and dyno'd the car at TEA this past weekend.

It's a used LS1 (85K miles), TEA 5.7 Stage 1.5 heads, 224/228/115lsa cam, LS6 intake, HS rockers. And a used set of MAC headers and y-pipe I picked up for $250.

392 hp.

That's with an automatic, a blower cam running na, and no timing tweaks yet.

The MAC's worked out well for me. I can't complain...

I recently had a set of Mac mid length with Mac cats installed and picked up 12 RWHP. I picked up a bunch of torque at lower RPMs also. This is without a tune. I'm happy with them and they sound good.

MAC's are great headers, however if you can afford LT's I would go with those instead.

Default Restrictive cats

How do you all know that MAC's have restrictive cats, especially since all of your cars seem to have ORY's ? Also, does anyone have MACs with the catted Y and have NO banging problems. What fixes did you use, if any?

Thanks!

MAC cats have been known to put down poor flow and dyno numbers. All of us have ORY's with our MAC's because we know they suck, or have some other brand of cat

Thumbs up

I concur, MAC cats are of poor quality...we ran their catted H-pipe on a bud's '91 Mustang LX and they crapped out within about 10K mi.

If you must need them for Smog reasons, Carsound converters work well and are inexpensive. $60 shipped from ebay.
