Starter dying question?
Can a dying starter mimick the scenario of having a low to dead battery?
My charging system is fine, had it checked, battery is fine, as well as the alternator.
I get the symptom that the starter is having a very hard time trying to start the car after say;
I am driving for about 30 minutes, stop at a store, shut it down, go in for a few minutes and come back out and try to start it I'll get the slow lugging sound as if the battery were very low. My question is, will excess heat (from the engine being ran for so long and 80+*F temps outside) on a starter that's heading out reproduce the symptom like this?
Thanks.

When mine went it did start slowing down but I thought it was just having a hard time with the new motors compression etc. Turns out it went bad a couple weeks later.
Once it did go all I heard was a whirring sound when I turned the key. But mine was slow everytime not just some of the time like you are saying. Definatly heat can get to the starter which is why they come with the heat sheild though. You can probably find a new starter with a lifetime warranty for about 80 bucks though if you want to experiment.

It's also not that much more expensive than a rebuilt OEM unit from AdvanceAutoParts so why not get a much more impressive and well built unit. The OEM one was not designed to crank against this much compression, at least not for long periods of time

I've got a Tilton Superstarter in mine, and they sound like hell on fire, just like a race car starting up, 'scratch - nano-screech and bang!'.... hehe
But being lightweight high geared - they werent designed for starting up more than a handfull of times a day.... they do fall apart when too vibration gets to them.... heat not really an issue...
Good luck - but trust me, these Power XS and Tiltons last even shorter than OEM!
Now what would be a nice thing, is a direct-crank-drive-starter... hehe

It should last much longer than an OEM unit. Powermaster told me their XS should far outlast any OEM unit.
