Default Dumb question please answer

I feel so dumb for this one but gotta ask before I do a short shifter install...how do you torque to a certain lb/of torque. Like in the instructions on installuniversity it says to torque to 18lbs of torque

It's implying how much pressure is needed to securely fasten the bolt. They have a tool or tools for that if you like to be dead on with stuff like that. They're rather expensive...so either just tighten it down a good deal ya know, but not to the the point where you've got your feet on a breaker bar, put a decent amount of torque on the bolts. Usually the need for the perfect amount of torque on bolts is only required on engine build-ups, chassis applications and other such imparative cases.

Then again i'm a low funding "shade tree mechanic/Phrunt Yawd Kuztumz" type of guy. So i tend to cut corners where possible.

But, if u want to be exact here are some prices for craftsman Torque Wrenches:

Those are just for an example, i'm sure if u go your local automotive store or home depot they'll have a few there and for your sake will be cheaper.

Torque wrench, which has an indicator on it.

Beam-types are rugged and cheap but generally
do not ratchet (dunno why nobody makes a beam-
type with a ratchet head).

Clicker-type wrenches ratchet but my experience with
them is that they drift out of proper calibration the
first time you grief on a stuck bolt with them (they
look like a nice long ratcheting breaker bar but do
not serve well). And no way to tell they're off.

A beam-type wrench you can tell it it's been abused
or is bent, just by looking. So it's a good candidate
for flea market or pawn shop pickup, or Harbor Freight
if you prefer shiny to "experienced".

Put some thread lock on those short shifter bolts. They come loose without thread lock.

where can i get thread lock. I did the install, went good, but I figured this short shifter will get loose after time and will have to be tightened periodically which i would like to eliminate. Thank you for all your responses, they have been very helpful.

^ any auto parts store. get the blue stuff, drop a couple drops on each bolt where the nut will thread, tighten nut. you're gonna have to take everything apart again.

like it was said, use a torque wrench. The clicker type may become uncalibrated over time, but it should be close enough for most things. Autozone has a 1/2" drive clicker for $25 or so. They also have a 3/8" drive one for even cheaper. For a short stick install, you probably dont even need a tq. wrench. I just tightened mine by hand. If youre using nylon locking nuts, you probably dont need thread lock. If youre using regular nuts, then go to the local auto parts store and buy a tube of locktite.
