Default Question for Magnaflow owners

I have recently installed a magnaflow catback on my car, a 2000 Formula. From what I read online, it is very quiet on the inside of the car. Mine is definatly not quiet. When I come from a stop to say 1200-2200 rpms, it is very loud in the car. Cruising is more of the same. It seems to resonate so much that it vibrates the hell out of a parking pass that is hanging on my rear view mirror. I am worried that I might have installed it wrong. Could this be because I did not tighten the clamps enough, or is this normal for this exhaust. Are there better clamps I can get, or should I get it welded?

Thanks
Mike

I wouldn't say that mine was very quiet inside the car, either, but in a good way. I definitely doesn't rattle the parking pass hanging from MY rear view mirror. I'd crawl under there and make sure that the exhaust isn't touching under the car somewhere, and causing that vibration. Definitely not normal.

It's probably hanging on the crossbrace or tapping the transmission crossmember. Check your clearances. It may have looked good when you finished, but unless you tightened the crap out of the clamps it probably moved a bit.

I have very happy with my magnaflow cat-back. I NEVER have in vibration in the interior of the car, and I only hear it during acceleration, at idle I dont hear it at all. The only thing I hear is around 1300 rpm it can sometimes drone, but not very badly. I agree with techincal, check all your clearances, especially where it goes around the axle. You should be able to get your hand around the pipe in all locations, (unless you have really big hands).

I am going to crawl under my car and check everything today, I will tell you how it turns out. Also, seems to be getting a little less high pichted, maybe this is because the sound stuff inside it is getting worn in. Thanks for all the help so far.

hey I had a problem with the one bracket slipping initially [the one with the rubber and slide in flat piece , but after about a 300 mile break in and 3 clamping sessions she hasnt moved an inch. seems to like to sit on the crossbrace alot, but once you resolve that with a re-clamp/tighten, its gold. tell you what though, I was kind of concerned cause on the inside its very resonant, very bassy/passive during acceleration and such, and I was even thinking a little ricey sounding. but outside is a completely different story. I'd had it on for about a month before I heard what it actually sounded like outside when I had to videotape my car for a documentary. and damn that catback sounds gooooood. nice and throaty, very deep.

You may find those clamps to be a problem if you keep adjusting. I suggest purchasing band clamps; torque them down to specs and they hold pretty good. I purchased mine from NAPA.

My only complaint about this exhaust is the ~1400rpm resonance - especially under load going up a hill for example. But for 300 bucks, this system is a great budget, stainless steel catback.

I love mine, and since I don't have the rubber boot in my shifter, it is quite loud inside the car

Only thing I would recommend is to make sure all the brakets are turned away from the ground. I broke one once. And I have never had any vibration, 3000 miles on it so far.

Thanks for the heads up on the ehxaust leak problem. I checked mine and sure enough the I-pipe to over-axle joint is leaking big time. My kids sit in the back seat on the way to school and were complaining how loud it was. They pretty much had an open exhaust exiting right unders their seats. Sorry kids. This is the exact reason I hang on this forum. Little tips that saved me form putting a resonator in the I-pipe and put my head/cam/headers plans back on track. It is so loud now that the wife would have a fit once it was fully modded. Thanks again.
