Default ASP install: Longer bolt or threaded rod/washer/nut combo

I see alot of posts about complications when installling pulleys and what I read, using the stock bolt to push the pulley on is not a good idea - too much stress on too little crank threads. Most use a longer bolt (M16 x 120mm) but I feel this still could still tear up the threads and the best would be to build my own rod/washer/nut tool. I can only get threaded rod in Meter lengths and will have to cut it to size (don't even know the right size yet). Should I go for it or just get a longer bolt? I get very nervous at the possibility of screwing something up. Thanks.

Default

Some recommend doing that. I've never had a problem using the stock bolt.
