when a doughnut shaped object is heated the inner hole does not get bigger. Heating it does nothing.

"when a doughnut shaped object is heated the inner hole does not get bigger. Heating it does nothing. "
Uh, yeah it does.
The object doesn't know it's curved into a doughnut.Volume of the part must expand and it expands outward, think of a CIRCLE OF BRICKS, if each brick got bigger the circle would expand in radius. Why do you heat stubborn nuts with a torch to get them to break loose on a rusted manifold stud?
consider:
1.your mom heating a jar lid under hot running water so she can get it open.
2.old timers in the Wild West heating a metal wagon wheel hoop to get it over a wooden spoke assembly, then cooling it with cold water and a rag to shrink it onto the form.

steel has an alpha [coefficient of linear thermal expansion] of 12-17 x 10^6 /C.it will behave as previously described in the temperature range of 250 F.

Ooops. how much, Mr Wizard would the length change?
Lf= Lo[1+ [[alpha]x [temp change.]] by the way , it's 12 x 10^-6 not 10^6

Lf = 6 in [1 + [.000012 x 125 C] = 6.009 or about 3 mils extra diameter. Just enough to squeeze it on with the torque wrench and bolt a little easier. And remember, 250F is hotter than that part ever sees on the street.

warming it DOES work...I don't care what anybody says...been doing it for years. Also to break the pulley bolt loose, I just wedge the pull handle against the ground or frame and bump the starter to break it loose...works like a charm.

Scotty, as far as the no small feat comment....I think he means his 2.73 geared car revs faster and it is not easy getting that kinda gear to rev....so it means it is good!!!!

I heard about that way but was too chicken to try it.

Yes exactly that, pulling in my car at least once it shifts to second gear [A4, 2.73] takes FOREVER from low rpms.

vert-a4- 3.23...ebay twin electric turbochargers!! 1st member of the 15 sec club!! 15 sec !!!!!! Is that the 1/8th mile or 1/4? I should have gotten those twin electrics for my 2001 GT instead of trading it in !!!!heh.

Tip... To Break The Bolt Loose, I Unhooked The Coil Pack Harness Wires-the Two White Connectors. Put The Socket On And Laid The End Of The Breaker Bar On The Ground(driver's Side). Turn The Ignition Key And ... Magic!!! The Bolt Is Broken Loose With Out Sweat.
