Kid comes home from College with the stereo blasting all the way home. He complains that the trans comes out of overdrive on occassion and won't go back in. I check the fluid and it's just a little low. I top it off, but the problem still persists. When he gets home I see a leak where the little rubber hoses head to the radiator. Does this carry trans fluid? I thought it did. Not oil right?
Now for the fun part. He complains that the engine sound terrible. I start it up and I'm sure there's no oil pressure, the sound is that bad. I check the dipstick. He's down 3+ quarts. I refill the oil, start up the car and it eventually quiets down to near normal.
$64,000 question, where did the oil go. There is no blue smoke and I don't see a pool of oil anywhere either. The oil was changed about 5,000 miles ago. The coolant and oil did not mix. If the head gasket was blown the coolant would have ended up in the block with a high dipstcik reading anyway. I'm 99% sure that the leak I saw was trans fluid not oil.
All help is appreciated. This is a '94 6 cylinder Buick.
