It has alot to do with the firing order of the motor and noise interference (constructive/destructive) within the exhaust itself...

Firing order does have alot to do with it, but at least around here most stangs, 5.0 and 4.6, run flowmaster 40's with no cats which has given Mustangs their good sound reputation. The same car with Dynomax mufflers sounds totally different. I've always thought that a cammed 5.0 with LT's, no cats, X pipe and flowmasters dumped is the best sound of any engine. 351W's also sound great too. However, my friend's 79 Camaro with a warmed over 350 had LT's, H pipe and Flowmasters dumped, it sounds pretty similar to a 5.0 above 3500. On our cars, the key to sounding like a stang (which is a good thing) is to run dumps or no tailpipes. A catback will always make our cars sound different.

at least with magnaflow mufflers.
I run Magnapacks on a true dual system on stock manifolds

I've got TSP True duals and people tell me my car sounds like a Mustang all the time. I guess I take it as a compliment but we'll see what they say after I get my cam installed.

Would Tru-duals give me this sound I want???
no true duals will not sound like a junkstange.they have a differant firing order than ls1's. 2 cylinders fire on the same side next too each other. thats why they sound so throaty. true duals on ls1's sound more like an older mustle car.your gonna have to wait for computer to load the sounds before you make your desicion so you get what you want.

Default good sounding mustangs

I used to have a 2000 Gt with MAC o/r H Pipe, 40 Flows, and stock headers. It sounded great. Now I have a 2001 WS6 which might not sound as throaty, but it smokes the hell out of my old stang. The way I see it is I would rather have the quietest car out there but still able to beat the loud ones. If it sounds loud as hell but still slow, who gives a crap.

I've got a 231/237 with TSP true duals with Sweet Thunder chambered mufflers...my car doesn't sound anywhere near as good as a mustang.

I've never heard any f-body come close to replicating that sound.

ok well to answer your question...material and firing order are basically the things that create the mustang sound...mustang's use an iron block...(deeper tone) hint lt1's...although lt1's have a different firing order as well...anyhow...the exhaust system makes a difference but when it comes down to it...all mustangs have the same general tone and f-body's have a general tone of their own (now for the people that disagree saying exhausts sound different...there is still the same general tone, which is what i am talking about)...just think corvette's have duals and sound NOTHING like a mustang...so there is no way you can get an ls1 to sound like a mustang...which is not necassarily a bad thing...i like the sound of the f-body's...depending on exhaust setup

You can always order the same muffs that the stangs have......just check the sizes for clearance.

just to add another .02cents, the most wicked mustang I ever heard was a 98 cobra with mid-length headers, off-road h-pipe, and an SLP loudmouth catback. I wanted to get down and start chanting " I'm not worthy" over and over again.

That wont do anything. For ex. a 40 series flowmaster is a 40 series flowmaster. Same muffler just custom made to fit different cars

OHC motors, nice cam specs, True Duals wiht an H pipe, and the firing order with an iron block all play factors in there sound

Thumbs up

There's no doubt [ in my mind ] that the V8 Mustangs sound pretty badass, esp the N/A Cobras, Mach 1 and 03+ Terminators... But, an ls1 with GMMG + LTs sounds very mean... esp at WOT Add a nice cam to that combo, and **** gets louder/deeper!! .. almost deafening!

But there's def. something very distinct about a KB Cobra with full exhaust ...

Stangs do sound good, but I like our cars just as much, would you really want all f-bodys to sound like stangs? I wouldn't.
I like being able to recognize an ls1 just by sound, on stock ones at least, and I enjoy the sound of mine. But to each his own.
