header extensions...

header extensions... How long should these be?
I've heard of different ways to find out using paint and crayons and what-not, but I need to order the parts to build these.
If it's 12" or slightly less, that'll save me a lot of money and some time. if not, it'll save me time to know that it'll take more inches
Looking for a 3" to slip over my header collector.
