... think I found one of the problems. I'm not sure, but, I'm finding that the black smoke might possibly be caused by a failing electric QTEC cutout ... causing it to flutter at WOT. Would this cause the PCM to get a little freaky and throw the A/F off a tad?

maybe. but i dont see why it would matter. if you open the cutout on your own, everything is fine. and if its closed everything is fine....so why would it matter if its not working right? i say go back to nlp and have the fix the tune. its not uncommon to lose part of the tune. or you could reset the pcm. itll run like *** at first, but it'll relearn and run good again after a lil bit

Huh?

Might want to check your connections or pins in your injectors and coilpack harness after you inspect your plugs and wires by removing them and looking at them closely. We just spent a few hours chasing same problem. Ended up being a plug tip was not very secure (came off in boot). Changed it, the wires and tightened the pins, and the sputter was gone. Also to make sure you don't have a leak before the O2's after the LT install. That could throw the 02's off and may cause sputtering and backfires.

For future reference, changing the sparkplugs fixed all my problems.

I had just put brand new plugs in the car and checked the wires really good. I took the electric cutout off the car and the butterfly plate in the cutout was loose as could be ... had about 1/2 inch of play in it. I also found that the oil dipstick anchor bolt was not tight and caused the dipstick tube to back out of the motor about 3/8". Between replacing the PCV valve, removing the cutout, and securing the dipstick tube (so it seats into the recess in the motor), I beleive the problem is fixed now.

I still have some valvetrain noise. Come to think of it, it seems to have started when I did an oil change and used 5W-30. I'm going to try going back to a slightly heavier weight (especially with summer coming up here if Florida) and I think that might help or even fix the clatter of the valvetrain.
