Talking Just got a Flowmaster

Howdy,
Just got a Flowmaster with a cut out @ the I-pipe put on. I know alot of people don't like them on the LS1's but damn it sound good. Nice smooth deep tone when I'm cruising that isn't too loud (4'' tips 18'' long). But still has a cool agressive sound @ WOT. Take off the cut out and it really comes alive. I love it and for $185 including labor (I think the guy does it for a hobby) it's that much better. Also I'd like to say this site is awsome. You guys are so helpful and freindly. I feel like I've already learned quite a bit of info on these cars. So thanks alot and let the mod-ing begin.

Thanks I figured the cut out would be a good idea especially with the flowmaster. I've heard they don't flow well on the LS1's. I wouldn't have known that if it weren't for this forum.

this is true because they dont flow as well as other systems...and most people here are more intrested in hp, but with a cut-out you some what solve that problem. so congrats on your setup

Hey thanks for the congrats. Also I definitly want more HP. I'm thinking about a lid and the frenco mod, changing to a 160* thermastat w/switch (just for the track), and an underdrive pulley w/alt. pulley. Then maybe down the road some LT's w/ORY. Until then I was just wanting to get some sound out of her to hold me over.

Flowmasters sound awsome. I had one on my ol' camaro.
Yeah I guess we all wanna see a Flowmaster what actually flows good too not just sounds good. I'll be first in line...
Good decision on the cut-out, you just bypassed the "problem."
You can have a nice sounding muffler and by opening your cut-out a better flowing exhaust.

a friend of mine has a flowmaster on his LT1 Z28 and it sounds awsome, i called Speed Inc. to get myself one, Larry told me that he wouldnt recomend it, he said the stock SS muffler flows better than a Flowmaster 80 series, so i went with a LM

anyways, congrats on moving up from that quiet sewing machine muffler

Man it was good to finally meet ya tonite and i have to say you have a very nice '99 there. We'll have to get together some time and take a few pics of our cars, i have yet to see any other '98 up local non-ws6 cars rolling around. It sounded really nice also, i like the deep tone of it.

And whats w/ the future mods Jody? I though it was your wifes car?

Have a good one and we'll see ya around. J.

yeah I've heard that the 80 series isn't worth putting on. You may want to ask your friend if he's got a 40 series on his Z. That's what I just put on mine. I think there supposed to flow a little bit better and it's louder. I bet that Loud Mouth sounds really good to.

Hey thanks man. It was good to meat you and your freinds too. You've got a pretty nice '02 yourself. Those sure are some impressive dyno numbers. Sure wish I had that intake you got. Oh well gives me an excuse to work on it one of these days. As for it being my wifes car, she started asking me how we could make it faster as soon as we were at Penwell turning those slow E/T's. I think I must be lucky to have a wife that likes fast cars.

Have a good one too man see ya around. Jody

if you put a 40 series on there then you are good to flow, they flow decently well, did you mount it after the y and ditch the tips or keep them? i think that people thought you were referring to the 80 series at first, which sucks for flow, 40's are the way to go!

Yup I got that 40 series on there. Sorry about the confusion I should have said that in the first post of the thread. Same spot as the stock muffler. The shop used the stock pipe going into the muffler. Then they welded new pipe coming out. I asked them to ditch the stock tips and weld on some 4'' tips 18'' long. I think that's part of what gives it such a deep sound. They welded the cut-out right in front of the axle on the I-pipe before it bends upward.

I've been thinking about flowmasters myself. I have heard them called "chokemasters" because of how inefficient they are. However I have also heard that if I go true duals that they will flow fine, its just on y-pipes they don't flow enuff. another question? what is delta flow technology on the new ones? someone told me to get 40 series w/o delta flow if I could.

If your gonna get a flowmaster muffler the 40 series is the only way to go as far as I know. If your looking for a bolt up cat-back system, I believe the American Thunder (made by Flowmaster) uses the 40 series muffler. I'm not completly sure though. Your may want to start a new thread w/that concern in the subject title. You might be able to get a little more help then. I think this thread is dead. These guys are pretty helpful. I'm just a newbie. Sorry I couldn't be more help. Good luck on that exhaust. You're gonna love this site.

http://www.racerpartswholesale.com/flomstr1.htm

dont mean to question your setup (as i like it)
but are you sure you have a 40 series? only reason i ask is, you said it replaced your stock mufler, but as you can see from the link i provided none of the 40 series does a single in, duel out on the correct side... hey i could be wronge, just want to make sure you got what you paid for...

The Catback system comes with an 80 series muffler. This is the muffler that flows like The 40 series muffler flows good.

Your very correct and yes it is a 40 series. The one on my car is single in, single out with an offset that has been modified. The stock pipe is welded to the inlet of the muffler. A new piece of pipe was welded to the outlet on the drivers side with a tip. IMO a muffler with one outlet on an otherwise stock exhuast works just as well as a muffler with one inlet and dual outlet. Unless of corse you modify the muffler that has one outlet. Also one tip coming out the back of a T/A would be rice cake city. So to add another tip would be a good idea, making it functional would be an even better idea. To do this the shop cut another hole on the inlet end of the muffler. Welded on a flange and welded to that another piece of pipe with a tip coming out the passenger side. There you have it, good ol southern enginering. And now that I'm thinking about it, the extra tip on the inlet side would probably help with flow if there was backpressure in the muffler. I do know for sure that it has a unique deep smooth sound to it. Also any concerns with flow could be solved by un-capping the cut-out. I feel like I got my money's worth and besides what's a muscle car with out a little bit of that southern enginering.

Thanks for your concern and what a great eye on noticing that about the 40 series Flowmaster.

This has me thinking. What about putting a 40 series single 3" inlet/dual 2.5" outlet on an F body and making the driver side tailpipe bend around the muffler like the magnaflow? Maybe I look into buying a couple of mandrel u-bends and nice tips.
