Default K&N intake system

Are these intakes worth it? Maybe I'm missing something. It just looks like a tube with a cone filter at the end. A friend of mine just took the stock lid off and ziptied the air filter in. That doesnt seem right but I dont see a real big difference. Maybe you guys could enlighten me about any HP gains or if it feels any different. Thanks.

BTW you should seen my buddys car its a 93 Lincoln Towncar and he's has done some weird stuff to it.

i believe MTI (well known sponser) were the first ones to make an aftermarket lid for LS1 cars... and when first dyno testing them, they first removed the stock intake and did like your buddy and put a cone filter right on the throttle body (to find close to zero resistance) and i think they picked up like 14rwhp... then after designing a new lid and installed a K&N filter they only lost 1rwhp! so it is a near perfect intake system... antway i hopw this helped.... either way you go will make a little more HP...
will you feal it? maybe, i think some people do.... but its NOT a SOTP mod.... but a list of mods that all f-bodys should have....

good luck!

I think that set up wouldnt be as effective as a lid after the engine heats up/

Explain why FIPK with a heat resistant panel would heat up anymore then a lid

the FIPK theres alot of debate.. I'm one of the believers in it will get to much heat..

the heat shield will get hot as well and it would heat up the filter..

rule of thumb for every 10degree's the incoming air heats up... 1% powerloss.

why does it matter? supposively you have a lid on your car.

I have one of the FIPK and I switched to it from the MTI "carbon fiber" lid.

I can't say how it did on the dyno, but I can say that I lost about 2 mph in the 1/4 when switching to the FIPK. I had the "free ram air mod" and used to run 109+ in the 1/4, now I am running 106-107 mph....relatively the same weather. Additionally, my gas mileage has decreased slightly with the FIPK. I'll be switching back to a lid in the near future....just my $.02

Sorry , Im not familiar with the heat debate , a lid will get just as hot under the hood , they are both located in the same position in the engine bay , If people want to spend the extra money on FIPK its not hurting performance , I dont think its very superior to a lid but an adequate alternitive .....IMO

IMO, if you like the look of the FIPK, get that one (It's the one I like and currently have, but I've got to get rid of it soon, check sig ). If you like the look of the lid and plan to customize/decorate it, get the lid (some painted/decal ones look pretty dope!). If you just feel like... ... keep the factory air box and throw a K&N replacement filter... I've had all three...

And in each case, there was never a performance difference I could even tacitly experience.

This can end the debate for some...

I have the FIPK and an aftermarket ram air hood that I ported the inside to let the air have a direct shot to the filter. I have no heat shield and as long as i'm moving the IATs don't get more than 5* more than the temps outside. I've autotapped it several times. I can't say how it would work for a regular TA hood, but for my setup it works very well.

I replaced my SLP lid with the FIPK system and like it. I don't notice much of a difference, but I think it give the engine bay a more performance look and I know the engine is sucking in some air. I can put my hand over it and rev and hear and feel the air. I personally like it. I bought mine used from ebay and will be sticking with it. I have no doubts that my car is getting plenty of air. As far as temperature goes, couldn't tell you. I have the metal heat shield, ram air hood. I think it is where it needs to be.

Well i ordered my SLP air induction package about 2weeks ago, it just got off back order and slowly comming. I was thinking of getting the FIPK, but for $300 ur outta your mind for one mod. I got the Ram air, Lid, filter, and smooth bellow (doesnt do much), all for $300, and in my opinion it'll do just as good as the FIPK, plus better on highways and on the track with my ram air... cooling the engine easier. I saw it as a better package, the only thing that matters is if your happy... well im pissed about the back order but theres nothing i can do bout that. Over all i think im gonna be more than happier with this setup...

I love my Fipk. At times you can hear it sucking the air in, seems like it flows very well.
