Default Sensor on Radiator blew out? why?

Yesterday while driving, the sensor (not sure of its exact name) on the top of the radiator on the passenger side came loose and spewed radiator fluid all over the engine bay. I took all the normal steps before driving: warmed up the car and I was also driving very slow (damn gravel roads). I always let it get to operating temp. before I drive. Got about half mile from home and I noticed the low coolant light come on and immediately turned around and headed home. I drove a total of 1 mile and the car didn't overheat or anything.

The square shaped sensor is held in by what appears to be two o-rings. It simply plugs in.

What would cause this sensor to pop out like this? The o-rings appeared to be in good shape.

I let the engine cool and gave it a good bath to get all the fluid off the engine bay.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

There's a small rectangular metal clip (about the thickness of a paperclip) that holds the sensor in place from the factory... Is it lost/damaged ?

My coolant level sensor has been in place without the retainer clip for a couple of years without problems...

Cheers,

Default .

Just make sure the ends of the clip snap in place if not, its gonna keep blowing off / leaking fluid. if it was tight, the thing should not come off.... pehaps get a new clip / sensor.
