Question Tap and Die

One of the 10mm bolts that holds the AIR pipe to the exhaust manifold is slightly damaged. I'm sure the internal threads in the exhaust manifold have issues too. Anyway, I picked up a Craftsman metric 19 piece tap die set. I was playing around with the bolt, and it appears it fits snug into the 9mm X 1.25 die, and is too loose in the 10mm dies.

1) how do I know if I'm using the right tap/die for this bolt?
2) should a 10mm bolt fit in a 9mm X 1.25 die?

I want to clean up the threads on the bolt and the exhaust manifold, but wanted to check here first before I mess something up. I've not done this before, so any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
MrEddie

The AIR tube bolts are M8x1.25.

The kit does have a 8mm X 1.25. I tried to thread the bolt into the die just using my finger, and it met cosiderable resistance. Is this normal? I know I need to put it in a vice and use some lubricant (turn 3/4, back off 1/4, repeat) when I actually get on it. Thanks for the quick reply!

use some oil or thread cutting creme or gel on the tap .... you need to back te tap up every so often when it gets tight and then continue cutting

I went to Home Depot and the bolt threads perfectly into the 8M X 1.25, as stated above. However, the 8M X 1.25 die does not screw on easily. Should I pick up a rethreader (repair existing threads) instead of using a tap/die (cuts new threads)? Thanks!
