Default TDs: Turndowns or not?

Last TD question for a while folks. Has anyone had turndowns, and then gotten rid of them, or vica versa? What differences did you notice in the sound on the outside and inside of the car? Thanks for any help.

I used to have turndowns, you can see them in my post in your other thread, and they created a horrible drone at about 45mph around 1200-1500 rpm. I cut them off one day to extend the pipes out the back and when I got set to go to the store to get pipe I started the car and the car sounded a lot different. And on the drive I noticed way less drone. IMHO cut your turndowns off and you'll be happy.

When you say the car sounded different, how so? I love the sound right now, and the only kind of drone/resonance I get is accelerating at about 50% throttle, but if loosing the turndowns cuts out some interior noise (and I completely see how this is possible as the sound isn't all under the car, its headed more towards the back) I'm all for it.

I opted for turn down/outs (not facing the ground, but not straight out) and really have no drone at all and the sound is very nice. I have 3" X with Sweet Thunders. My 5.0 had dumps on it and I cut them off and it sounded like crud!!!

It sounds deeper and smoother. It's hard to explain but anyone who has riden in my car noticed after I removed the turn downs.

Hmmm, going to have to take the duals off in the coming weeks to take the tranny out, so I may just throw a blade on the sawzall and cut the turndowns right on off. Would like some more input though. I know a few more have had turndowns and removed them (or vica versa).

I have the tsp duals and cut the turndowns off last week. It made quite a difference, I lost some of the drone and it is quieter inside the car now.

Don't you all worry about the exhaust heat blowing right towards the rear diff and heating the fluid up potentially causing damage?

Thats pretty thick metal, I doubt the exhaust, venting into the atmosphere, even if aimed at the rear, could produce enough heat to saturate that metal and heat the rear fluid up.

With turndowns, the exhaust is exiting the car and it is essentially being trapped between the car and the ground, which would most likely create some noise. Cutting the turndowns off would make it exit straight back, and SHOULD have less reverberation under the car. I love the way my car sounds, its sick and devilish, but not overbearing. However, if I could cut down on interior volume some thats always going to be a plus IMO.

I say dont cut them off unless you are gonna extend them out, no way I'd want hot gasses pointing at my gas lines/tank.

Wait till you run them out the back, before you cut anything. Going out the back with true duals is THE WAY. I've noticed 40% less noise inside and NO one tailgates me!!

The gas lines and tank aren't even that close, at idle there isn't much coming out anyway, and there is plenty of atmosphere between the pipes and the tank/lines for heat to reduce to the temperature to the air around it. At speed or while WOT, you've got air flowing that is going to cool things off even if the exhaust could get close to heating any of it up (which again, I doubt). If cutting them off will give me a deeper sound with less interior noise, I'm all for it. Doing the converter this weekend, so I'll pull the duals and cut those turndowns off. Worst case scenario I dont like it and have them welded by on for a few bucks.

Well, I cut the turndowns off last night and I didn't notice that much difference. The sound is smoother, and it is a little bit quieter at part throttle. WOT may just be a little louder and is definitely a better tone. However, I now notice a little more drone although it is still almost non-existent. The rattles are pretty much the same. So now, do I run it out the back or out the side? I found low-clearance tips that would fit nicely in front of the rear tires. What will sound better? How will the sounds differ from out the back as opposed to out the side?
